Summary

This position is part of the Office of Science-Headquarters, Department of Energy. A successful candidate will serve as a Physicist in the Office of High Energy Physics (HEP), and will manage, coordinate and communicate activities relating to the Advanced Technology R&D effort as part of the HEP program, specifically supporting the science of particle accelerators and the technologies used in particle accelerators and storage rings, as well as the fundamental physics of charged particle beams.

Duties

Help

As a full performance, GS15, Physicist, you will:

  1. Serve as a scientific authority on particle accelerators and the underlying technologies used therein, as well as the fundamental physics of charged particle beams; take responsibility to plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate research programs and projects in this field on a national and international level.
  2. Examine and ascertain pioneering research needs and opportunities of this research program against scientific and technological advances and of potential needs of the DOE High Energy Physics accelerator technology research and development subprogram.
  3. Serve as a Program Manager determining scientific focus and direction of the research program in accelerator science and technology research and development, preparing calls for proposals, organizing independent peer reviews, and recommending funding allocations.
  4. Prepare, justify, and support the portions of the Office's budget relating to accelerator science and technology research and development. Propose and implement adjustments to programs during the budget approval process and unanticipated developments.
  5. Work with other Federal research agencies, international partners, and community stakeholders in developing and maintaining strategic planning for the accelerator science and the technology research and development program via workshops, planning meetings, funding agency discussions, and community town hall meetings.

Qualifications

Qualifications Basic Education Requirement 1310:

1. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.
or
2. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the education requirement above, candidates must possess the specialized experience below.


SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
GS14:
A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as:

  • Providing advice toward planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of programs and projects in the area of high energy particle physics or closely related research and technology areas, including but not limited to accelerator and beam physics, radio frequency acceleration, and high-field magnet science and technology.
  • Providing recommendations on the development, coordination, and organization of funding allocations.
  • Representing an office and meeting with senior management officials, university, laboratory, and professional groups on scientific research and technology research and development issues.
GS15: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as:
  • Serving as a Program Manager, or scientific authority on particle accelerators, and related technologies.
  • Monitoring scientific progress of high energy particle physics research and/or scientific research areas, including but not limited to accelerator and beam physics, radio-frequency acceleration, and high-field magnet science and technology.
  • Planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating research or technology R&D programs and projects in the area of high energy physics or a closely related area.
  • Consulting with scientific personnel both nationally and internationally on sensitive issues and complex areas of strategic planning, or coordination of collaborative research and technology research and development.
  • Preparing, justifying, and supporting the office's budget during he approval process, and allocating funds.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience at the GS-14 or GS-15 level.

Education must be obtained from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
