Help

Major Duties include:

  • Survey and appraise Glacier National Park administrative and resource management records.
  • Process (arrange, preserve and describe) record collections following professional standards and agency guidelines.
  • Produce user-friendly, detailed finding aids to make the informational content of the records accessible to researchers.
  • Cataloging collections in electronic databases.
Physical Demands: The work requires frequent retrieval of records and books from storage areas with some bending and lifting of cartons of papers (weighing up to 50 pounds). Operation of standard office equipment is required and some operation of motor vehicles. Records are stored in a variety of buildings, some of which are in poor condition (e.g. lack of heat, steep stairways, pest issues). Work may require travel to various locations for the purpose of acquisition and collection of records, and to training and professional meetings. Archival processing, documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, which requires the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.

Working Conditions: Most of the work is performed in the park's museum/archives storage facilities. Occasional work will be performed in office spaces and storage facilities of other park divisions.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You will be required to complete a one-year trial period.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-03/12/2022-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this position at the GS-09 grade level, you must possess both of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

Basic Education Requirement: Have successfully completed a bachelor's degree in an accredited college or university in archival science; or a bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government.

Or, possess a combination of education and experience with at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in 1A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The quality of the combination of education and experience is sufficient to demonstrate that I possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform archivist work, and is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major as described above.

Note: This position has a positive education requirement and you must provide a copy of your transcripts (see Education section of this announcement) or you will not be considered for this position.

In addition to the basic education requirements, applicant must meet the minimum qualification requirements for a Archivist, GS-1420-09 as described below:

Specialized Experience and/or Education Requirements: Have at least one year of experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service in archival science, or a directly related field such as history, that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values. Examples include experience as an archivist in a Federal, state, religious institution, business, or other archives, or in manuscript depositories; experience of an archival nature that involved research in archival science, or a directly related field such as history, government, economics, political science, international relations, or international law. Experience may also include work related to organizing, arranging and describing a major body of records; cataloging archival collections; appraising records for retention based on a records schedule and implement appropriate disposition; preparing finding aids appropriate to the collection; rehousing archival collections and assessing their condition; accessioning collections, and providing reference services for archival material.

Or, have successfully completed two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in an accredited educational institution concentrated in a field that is directly related to the work of this position, such as archival science or history, that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values.

Or, have an equivalent combination of such education and experience. For example, have six months of the specialized experience (50 percent of the experience requirement) and 27 semester hours or 41 quarter hours of directly related graduate education (50 percent of the education requirement).

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
