Duties

Help

As a Physicist, you will:

  • Serves as a scientific authority on high energy physics and technical authority in various aspects of science program management; reviews policies for merit-based peer review, facilities science, technology reviews and laboratory appraisals; organizes funding allocations and serves on scientific advisory committees.
  • Examines and ascertains research needs and opportunities of the research program against scientific and technological advances and of potential needs of an office.
  • Represents an office on committees composed of agency, interagency, and government personnel on programmatic issues or interests; consults and negotiates with leading government and scientific personnel both nationally and internationally on sensitive issues and complex issues.
  • Prepares, justify, and supports portions of the budget relating to the research program; develops, coordinates, and organizes funding allocations; ensures recommendations for program operations are considered in the organization's budget request.
  • Develops and prepares analytical documents and presentations to communicate with top management higher echelons of government on the status of programmatic phases and new developments and opportunities.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following Basic Education Requirement:

Basic Requirements:

A. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics. or

B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.

In addition to meeting the basic education requirements above, applicants must meet the following experience:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

GS-14:
A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-13 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience providing input toward planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of programs and projects in the area of high energy particle physics or closely related research areas, including but not limited to cosmology or particle astrophysics; providing recommendations on the development, coordination, and organization of funding allocations; representing an office and meeting with senior management officials, university, laboratory, and professional groups on scientific research and technology R&D issues.

GS-15: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-14 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience organizing independent peer reviews, recommending funding allocations, monitoring scientific progress of high energy particle physics research and/or related scientific research areas, including but not limited to cosmology or particle astrophysics; experience planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating research program and projects in the area of high energy physics; consulting with scientific personnel both nationally and internationally on sensitive issues and complex areas of importance, such as strategic planning, or coordination of collaborative research and technology R&D,
