Duties

Help

  • Presents a wide variety of interpretive and/or education programs, using appropriate devices and techniques. These programs include formal and informal presentations, education field trips or classroom programs, roving interpretation, hikes, live dive presentations or demonstrations.
  • Assists with the management of day to day operations of an interpretive or education program, such as planning, developing interpretive media, employee supervision and management, and visitor operations.
  • Perform staff duties such as scheduling, training, coaching and mentoring interpretive staff, interns, and volunteers.
  • Audits interpretive or education products, and provides constructive advice based on the NPS Interpretive Development Program or similar criteria.
  • Staffs visitor center and island district providing information, orientation, interpretation, and operational services; provides high quality customer service, adheres to SOPs, and insures professional appearance of facilities, availability of resources and materials, and a safe accessible environment; responsive in a timely manner to visitor inquiries.
  • Establishes and maintains good working relationships with other divisions, park partners, and media to accomplish goals of the division and the park.
  • Prepares and submits reports, interpretive or educational materials, and other correspondence at the request of the Branch Chief. Speaks to partner and community groups and others.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You will be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 16 nights per month.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-01/19/2022.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position performs underwater kelp forest interpretive programs as part of Channel Islands Live, which is live broadcasted over the internet and a current open water certification from a recognized organization is required. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position.

To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service which includes park guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management; work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and/or implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hour or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation, such as American history, science, public speaking, parks and recreation, education, communications, natural resource management, natural sciences, biology, marine biology/sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, wetlands ecology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. You must include transcripts.

To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service which includes developing and presenting walks, talks, on and off-site programs to schools, community groups and special interest groups about park resources and the rules for park usage. Assisting with the development of programs that deal with natural and cultural themes and resources. Assisting with the development of new interpretive documents and materials such as guidebooks, handouts, slide shows, exhibits, websites, podcasts, and other media. Operating visitor center information desk. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate study in one of the following fields: natural resource management, natural sciences, marine biology/sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, wetlands ecology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. You must include transcripts.

Superior Academic Achievement: Successful completion of a bachelor's degree in one of the following fields: accounting, business, finance, law, contracts, purchasing, economics, industrial management, marketing, quantitative methods, or organization and management AND meet one of the Superior Academic Achievement provisions: (1) Class Standing: ranked in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as College of Liberal Arts or School of Business Administration, based on the completed courses; OR (2) Grade-Point Average: earn a grade-point average of (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on the transcript, or as computed based on four years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final two years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B " or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field, or the required courses completed during the final two years of the curriculum. Note: grade-point averages will be rounded to the one decimal place, for example, 2.95 = 3.0, 2.94 = 2.9, and 3.45 = 3.5; OR (3) Membership in a National Scholastic Honor Society: elect membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies. Freshman scholastic honor societies cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision. EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service which includes developing and presenting walks, talks, on and off-site programs to schools, community groups and special interest groups about park resources and the rules for park usage. Developing programs that deal with diverse and complex natural and cultural themes and resources. Developing new interpretive documents and materials such as guidebooks, handouts, slide shows, exhibits, websites, podcasts, and other media. Operating visitor center information desk. Responsible for managing a supplies budget to support visitor center operations. Participating in civic engagement with local chambers of commerce, rotary clubs, businesses, museums, and other on-profit or civic based organizations. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education, or a master's or equivalent graduate degree in one of the following fields: natural resource management, natural sciences, marine biology/sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, wetlands ecology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
