Duties

Help

  • Perform annual and comprehensive condition assessments of trees.
  • Perform risk (hazard) assessment of trees.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and identifies hazardous trees for annual tree condition assessment and corrective action determinations.
  • Remove desired trees using a chainsaw and 'directional-felling' techniques.
  • Operate various motorized heavy equipment.
  • Prune, remove, plants, transplants, sprays, and cultivates trees.
  • Climb trees up to 120 feet.
  • Use various climbing methods to perform arboricultural operations.

  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
  • You must possess and maintain a current Class B or higher Commercial Driver's License.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel for training, to attend meetings and to various work sites. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

  1. Ability to do the work of an Arborist WG-5001-07 without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT)
  2. Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (other than blueprints)
  3. Dexterity and Safety
  4. Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  5. Knowledge of Materials
  6. Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic)
  7. Use of Measuring Instruments

Physical Demands: Ability to work at heights up to 100 feet. Ability to lift weights up to 75 pounds. Long periods of physical exertion. Prolonged exposure to repetitive motion. When motor vehicle or tractor operator duties are performed moderate effort is exerted to manipulate equipment controls.

Working Conditions: This type of work is inherently dangerous and may result in serious injury from slips, trips, or falls and could, in the unlikely event; result in death when performed incorrectly. This work is performed outside and is subject to weather conditions ranging from high heat and humidity to sub-zero temperatures. You may be exposed to a variety of site hazards including extreme environmental conditions; poisonous plants, insects, and/or reptiles; electrical conductors; uneven terrain; pedestrian/vehicular traffic, etc. You may be exposed to prolonged exposure to noise in excess of 85 decibels (db) when working with or in close proximity to chainsaws, wood chippers, etc. When vehicles are operated there is additional exposure to risk due to traffic accidents, overturning or boom accidents aloft.
