This is a Full-Time TERM position. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed thirteen months, with possible extensions up to a total of four years without further competition.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Duties

Help

  • Examines for content, and identifies and selects significant concepts and characteristics to be recorded for use in automated retrieval.
  • Recognizes the need for cross referencing related fields. Determines locations and subjects for additional level of coding for source materials. This involves identifying various buildings or areas within parks, utilizing many reference sources (e.g., maps, atlases, reports), and consulting with professional staff as necessary.
  • Uses the NPS automated cataloging system and procedures to catalog and manage archival collections. Ensures proper maintenance, storage, control, and record management of materials.
  • Provides proper storage for historic documents.
  • Monitors climate control systems and prepares proper folders, sleeves, boxes, and other physical housing in order to assure maximum preservation, organizational integrity, and accessibility for use.
  • Assures preservation of historic document collections. Assists in the preparation of preservation plans for collections, and assists with basic preservation treatments, such as humidification, flattening, and cleaning plans and maps; preparing manuscripts for microfilming; and/or surveying photographic negatives.
  • Makes archival and manuscript collections, including audio-visual and electronic records, available for study and reference, including scheduling visitor appointments, monitoring visitor examination of historic documents, answering questions, providing research assistance, and directing visitors to other resources, including other research facilities in the area.
  • Performs difficult searching duties on the basis of correspondence and telephone requests from the NPS and public.
  • Performs research necessary to classify, authenticate, value, and describe historic documents in the collection and to answer staff or public inquiries.
  • Prepares special studies, compiles reports, and performs specialized research as necessary to further the proper management of historic document collections, or to further the body of area history.
  • Performs a variety of clerical functions in support of the organization.

  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.   • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to complete a one-year trial period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home . You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the Federal service that is in or related to the duties of this position of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. This specialized experience for this position includes experience such as: catalog information according to archival and record management standards; screen, organize, select, arrange, and/or rearrange records; collect and correlate data and information derived from a number of sources; prepare cross-references, finding aids, and related instructional material; provide adequate reference service from a system of records; generate reports from documents and records management systems.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Physical Demands: The work is partially sedentary with prolonged standing,walking, and bending often required. Heavy item (report, drawings, and boxes) must be lifted or moved on a routine basis.

Working Conditions: The work is usually performed in a museum storage area, work space, research room, or office setting. Incumbent may work with potentially dangerous collections that have biological contamination, such as mold, insects, or vermin, requiring, protective dusk masks, gloves, and laboratory coats.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
