Clarification Statement: Open to current career/career conditional federal employees of the National Park Service, Land Management (LMWFA) and non-competitive NPS merit promotion
Supervises up to six permanent GL-09 law enforcement rangers.
Recruits, selects, establishes performance standards and requirements, schedules, makes work assignments, plans and carries out employee development, evaluates, counsels, recommends disciplinary action and incentive awards, approves leave and prepares performance appraisals for staff.
Serves as a commissioned Ranger responsible for performing a variety of law enforcement duties including detection, investigation, apprehension, detention and prosecution under provisions of applicable laws, rules, and regulations enacted to ensure the protection and safe use of National Park Resorces.
Plans, supervises, directs and conducts the enforcement of criminal laws of the United States as well as park regulations and state laws.
Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates work unit operations to meet current goals. Schedules and directs patrol resources for greatest impact.
Supervises and participates in search and rescue operations on land, water and in cave environment.
Supervises and participates in emergency medical operations at the EMT level.
Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.

Any individual who is currently holding, or has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet time-in-grade requirements (must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent in the Federal service). You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.

Qualifications

This position is covered by enhanced retirement provisions which stipulate mandatory retirement at age 57 after 20 years of service. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age and must not have reached their 37th birthday upon appointment to this position. EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Examples of specialized experience could include, but are not limited to: park guide or tour leader; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked.
-OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least three full years of graduate level study leading to a Doctorate, Ph.D., or equivalent degree at an accredited college or university in directly related fields such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management; law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, or sociology. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours or equivalent earned towards a graduate degree, in excess of 36 semester hours, and divide by 18 semester hours or equivalent. Then, take the number of months of experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include hours per week worked and must include transcripts.

Physical Demands: The work requires, on a regular and recurring basis, considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as rapid hiking over steep terrain, walking or running over rough and uneven surfaces, carrying heavy loads in excess of 50 pounds long distances over rugged terrain. It occasionally requires defending the incumbent or others against physical attack, or requires crouching and crawling in restrictive spaces. The employee may be required to wear personal protective gear. The incumbent and subordinates can be exposed to potential carriers of communicable diseases through law enforcement and emergency medical contacts. The Incumbent can also be exposed to high frequency noise during search and rescue,
law enforcement, fire activities and helicopter operations.
This position requires possession of a NPS Law Enforcement Commission and the Incumbent must meet established physical qualification requirements for law enforcement positions. This requires passing an arduous duty medical examination. Incumbent must maintain oneself in a physically fit manner and maintain a familiarity with and complies with the Health and Fitness Guidelines.
Working Conditions: The work environment regularly involves high risks with exposure to hostile and dangerous law enforcement situations in remote areas. The environment can have such extremes as working to affect a rescue under adverse conditions or entering a confined space. The employee seeks out persons that may be armed and attempting to commit violent felonies in remote environments, which poses considerable risk. The employee is routinely exposed to dangerous and frequently uncontrollable situations such as physical attack and an unusually stressful environment. Conditions range from bitter winter to humid summer weather In a patrol car, all-terrain vehicle, bicycle, boat or on extended foot patrol in remote rugged areas or confined spaces.

To ensure compliance with an applicable preliminary nationwide injunction, which may be supplemented, modified, or vacated, depending on the course of ongoing litigation, the Federal Government will take no action to implement or enforce the COVID-19 vaccination requirement pursuant to Executive Order 14043 on Requiring Coronavirus Disease 2019 Vaccination for Federal Employees. Therefore, to the extent a Federal job announcement includes the requirement that applicants must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 pursuant to EO 14043, that requirement does not currently apply.
