As a Supervisory Hydrologist/Geologist/Geographer within the MD/DE/DC Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
Manages USGS employees assigned to the studies section group.
Management of a program of water science investigations which encompass a broad range of interpretive studies, analysis, data collection, basic and applied research in hydrology, hydrogeology, geography including landforms and geomorphology.
Initiates, responds to, and coordinates regular contact with other Federal, State, and local agencies on behalf of the USGS. Collaborates and coordinates with other USGS employees managing science investigations programs.
Ensures produced products meet USGS standards through implementation of Fundamental Science Practices.
Conducts other complex water science investigations and research that vary in scope and effect. Publishes results through various channels such as USGS publications and professional journals.
Physical Demands: Work is primarily sedentary. Visits to field sites require walking over rough terrain and occasional lifting and climbing.
Work Environment: Most work occurs in an office setting, but occasional field work is required.

B: A combination of education and experience-- courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semesters hours in geography or related fields, as shown in "A" above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.
BASICEDUCATIONREQUIREMENT FOR HYDROLOGIST: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Hydrologist, all grade levels.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics.
B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.
BASICEDUCATIONREQUIREMENT FOR GEOLOGIST: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geologist, all grade levels.

A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.
For GS-13:
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in geology that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service.
Examples of such experience may include: developing an annual staffing and budgeting plan that manages workloads to successfully execute water science investigations; identifying facility, equipment, and materials needs to ensure the execution of program requirements; developing proposals for studies to meet identified needs, applying and enhancing accepted standard methods to ensure the quality of data and interpretations; collaborating and coordinating with other employees managing science investigations programs; and maintaining cooperative relationships with external partners such as other federal, state and local agencies to develop science investigations programs.
