Help

As a Interdisciplinary Computer Scientist/Mathematical Statistician/Physical Scientist within the Upper Midwest Environment Sciences Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Designs, documents, develops, modifies, tests, implements, and supports new and existing applications and technical solutions built using a variety of computer programming languages and statistical approaches. Translates systems requirements into application prototypes. Plans, designs, and implements user interfaces and data processing applications in both server and cloud environments.
  • Participates in agile software development lifecycle in a team environment. Works with project staff to test applications. Quality assures software and systems quality and functionality.
  • Applies an understanding of various natural science arenas in partnership with USGS scientists and cooperators to translate business requirements into application architecture, design, user interface, and other technical specifications.
  • Utilizing GitHub or other code repositories, preserves the functionality of computer science tools and web services (open standards used to exchange data between applications and systems) used by USGS scientists, data managers, cooperators, and stakeholders.
  • Presents technical solutions to team members and project cooperators; discusses issues and recommends approaches for achieving project goals. Prepares comprehensive reports of project results and writes and maintains technical documentation on software development, data management system, and statistical models.
  • Mentors' junior software development staff and leads in a team environment. Develops proposals, workplans, and review procedures.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT for Physical Scientist, GS-1301: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Physical Scientist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

B. A combination of education and experience--education equivalent to one of the majors shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science, engineering, or mathematics) that included at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in physical science and/or related engineering science as described above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT for Mathematical Statistician, GS-1529: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Mathematical Statistician, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor`s or higher degree that included 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, of which at least 12 semester hours were in mathematics and 6 semester hours were in statistics.

B. A combination of education and experience -- at least 24 semester hours of mathematics and statistics, including at least 12 hours in mathematics and 6 hours in statistics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT for Computer Scientist, GS-1550: Applicants must meet the following to satisfy the basic education requirement for Computer Scientist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in computer science or a bachelor's or higher degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.

For GS-12:

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement as described above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-12 level:

Possess one year of appropriate professional experience that is in or directly related to the duties of the position to be filled is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

Examples of such experience may include: designing, developing, testing, and supporting new and existing applications built using a variety of computer programming languages and statistical approaches; implementing data processing applications in both local server and cloud environments; utilizing GitHub or other code repositories; experience in agile software development lifecycle in a team environment; applying an understanding of natural science arenas in partnership with other scientists and collaborators to translate business requirements into application architecture, design, user interface, and other technical specifications; applying knowledge of statistical modeling approaches and ability to develop machine learning methods to conduct artificial intelligence computing tasks with remotely sensed data; experience applying principles and concepts of scientific data management, including techniques for making data findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable; and mentoring developers and managing team projects.
