Fee Collection As a senior NPS Visitor Use Assistant, incumbent is responsible for collecting appropriate fees at a park entrance station, visitor center, campground, iron rangers, automated fee machines and/or other visitor contact station following established accountability guidelines for handling government funds. Incumbent operates an electronic cash register, computer or Point of Sale system, performs opening and closing shift functions, issues entrance receipts, tour tickets, park passes and federal recreation passes in accordance with established guidelines, and verifies entrance receipts and various passes for validity dates. Processes refunds or upgrades as needed according to established guidelines. Due to the level of training and experience at this level, the incumbent assists in training of lower grade Visitor Use Assistants and in work schedule development. Incumbent completes shift reports to verify money collected, accountable stock sold and all machine transactions from the shift, using journal and receipt tapes and a register of voided transactions. Safeguards funds collected and personal accountable stock. Incumbent prepares remittance reports and bank deposits for funds collected but may not prepare these reports for any shift for which they collect the fees. Pulls vaults, counts and opens registration envelopes. Maintains necessary accountability records. Troubleshoots accounting problems by correcting difficult errors that are unsolvable by others which may involve correction of related reports. May perform reconciliations of credit card transactions and revenue generated through pay.gov. May perform campground duties such as collecting fees, monitoring campground self-registration collection activities, checking on site availability, duties associated with the national campground reservation service, and conducting compliance checks of campground users to ensure proper payment of fees. May service or maintain automated fee machines or other fee collection equipment.
Visitor Information As a uniformed employee of the National Park Service (NPS), incumbent serves as a front-line representative of the agency. In many instances, the incumbent is the first and only contact the visiting public has with a NPS employee. Incumbent works at an entrance station, campground office, visitor center and/or other visitor contact station. As a NPS Visitor Use Assistant, incumbent is responsible for providing current, accurate information to visitors concerning the NPS area and other surrounding areas of interest. Incumbent explains the area's recreational opportunities, including NPS interpretive services, concession operated facilities and services, campground availability and hiking trails; distributes maps, brochures and other printed material; informs visitors of potential safety hazards; and provides directions and routes of travel through the park.
Resource Orientation Incumbent provides public orientation and explanations of current park events, resource management projects, management policies and legislative updates on issues affecting the natural, historical and/or cultural preservation of the area. Incumbent is knowledgeable about a variety of resource-oriented topics and continues to keep this knowledge current by attending training and meetings. Incumbent explains the significance of the area's natural, cultural and/or historic resources, advises visitors of park regulations and explains importance of such to protection of the area, resources, and/or safety of visitors. Incumbent serves as a deterrent to infractions of park resource regulations by his/her presence and willingness to initiate resource-related conversation with visitors. Incumbent conducts informal talks and/or discussions with groups of visitors to stimulate a sense of appreciation for, encourage protection and preservation of, and gain support for management decisions concerning the park's resources.

Physical Demands: Standing for long periods of time, walking, bending, lifting of moderately heavy items and sedentary work is required. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts and the responsibility of dealing with large amounts of money. Extreme physical exertion may be required while performing search and rescue, wildland fire-fighting and other emergency response duties.
Working Conditions: Work is often performed in small, outdoor structures with open windows which results in exposure to extremes of temperature, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight. Park areas may be geographically located in areas of high elevation, rugged terrain, or dense populations. High levels of vehicle noise and emissions may exist during heavy visitation periods. Duties may be performed alone in isolated locations.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
