Duties

Help
  • Presents curriculum-based education programs to support the mission and purpose of the park as well as the learning objectives of individual groups.
  • Assists in the research and development of curriculum-based activities and support materials (e.g., lesson plans, workshops, pre/post-visit activities, field trip orientations, charts, handouts, etc.).
  • Assists in planning, organizing, and presenting workshops for teachers.
  • Participates in special youth and family programs and other community outreach activities as needed.
  • Ensures on-the-job safety and health of visitors (especially children), VIPs, and coworkers in accordance with park safety plans and Operational Leadership principles.
  • Maintain contact with the local Hispanic Council when offering summer camps and also with the local school districts migrant education program.

  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.

Qualifications

This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. Selectee's work periods will be at least six (6) months but total less than twelve (12) months per calendar year. Will work 80 hours per pay period when in a pay status.

Will be placed in a non-pay/non-duty status from approximately 6/2021 to 11/21 unless other work exists that can be assigned during this period. When operational needs and/or funds are not available, the employee will be placed in non-pay status.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: The duties of this position include maintaining contact with the local Hispanic Council, and with the local school districts' migrant education program. This requires proficiency in reading, writing and speaking Spanish. An interview may be conducted in Spanish to verify proficiency.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level in which you are applying:

GS-6:

Specialized Experience:
Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the private or public sectors) performing the following: (1) Delivering educational or interpretive presentations to the general public; (2) Collaborating with schools, teachers, other educational groups, and representatives from official, regional, state, federal, or tribal organizations, park visitors and park staff to provide and obtain information; (3) Assisting in the development of learning activities and supporting materials (e.g. lesson plans, workshops, activities, etc.); (4) Preparing a variety of documents to support educational/interpretive programming (e.g. charts, handouts, maps, etc.)

TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-5 is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-6 level. (Must submit your SF-50 that shows Time-in-Grade eligibility and reflects your title, series, and grade. No award SF-50 will be accepted).

You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Physical Demands:

The work varies from sedentary to strenuous and takes place in a variety of settings, both indoors and outdoors. The position requires the ability to walk or stand for extended periods of time, hiking in rough, steep terrain, sometimes over rainy conditions and in extreme wet weather. The work requires operation of a government vehicle to access a variety of locations to provide programs both within and outside the park.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors during all types of weather. Outdoor work can involve exposure to hot often windy conditions in summer and rain and cold winds in winter. Indoor work is carried out in an office setting. The work demands direct contact with students and visitors of all ages.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
