Duties

Help

As a Research Geophysicist within the Earthquake Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Develops quantitative, physical models of the earthquake process and ground-motion propagation using novel or complex modeling or computational methods.
  • Benchmarks new or existing models of earthquake process and ground-motion propagation using earthquake observations, to provide information on accuracy of earthquake source and crustal property models.
  • Improves the ability to model or predict earthquake hazard by defining and attacking a series of related studies that fill in gaps.
  • Develops a comprehensive approach to incorporate new physical models or observations of earthquake source or crustal properties into seismic hazard analysis, which leads to changes in how to implement key USGS products, such as ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning (EEW), ShakeMap or the National Seismic Hazard Maps.
  • Works to understand and improve modeling of uncertainty in earthquake ground motion propagation, crustal properties, earthquake source or hazard analysis.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geophysicist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.).

B. A combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours in mathematics (including calculus) and the physical sciences (geophysics, physics, engineering, geology, astronomy, meteorology, electronics, etc.), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. (CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS ON HOW TO COMBINE EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE)

For GS-13:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in geophysics that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience could include conducting seismological research, serves as a full member of a research team and must have demonstrated an ability to design, plan and execute research tasks by clearly defining problems; developing and executing research plans: and authoring or co-authoring scientific papers of importance to the assigned research situation.

For GS-14:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-14 level:

Examples of such experience may include: conceiving, formulating, conducting, and/or leading research studies in the field of seismology. The researcher typically works as a primary investigator and must have demonstrated an ability to explore new and innovative techniques: design, plan and execute research tasks of national and international significance by clearly defining problems and developing and executing research plans, and authoring major scientific papers of importance to the assigned research situation.

You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.

Education

  • Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
  • Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the above requirements. You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States. Veterans' preference rules for category rating will be applied.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position are as follows:

  1. Knowledge and experience in conducting and leading fundamental seismological research in developing quantitative, physical models of the earthquake processes, ground-motion propagation, and the earth properties that affect ground-motion; integrating new data with existing or complementary data to design these investigations; understanding physical processes and conditions controlling ground-motion genesis; and applying this research to earthquake hazard assessment including earthquake early warning. Scientific vision and research plans to address major avenues of investigation in ground-motion propagation and modeling for hazard assessment.
  2. Knowledge and experience in developing and applying advanced algorithms and procedures used to numerically or observationally model or simulate broadband earthquake wave propagation and ground motions in complex earth models.
