Duties

Help

As a Geologist (Map Editor) within the Science Publishing Network, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Reviewing, electronically editing, and revising geologic map manuscripts and scientific text manuscripts for publication.
  • Reviewing illustrations and tables for clarity, internal consistency, and conformance to publication standards.
  • Suggesting changes and rewrites or reorganizing sections of geologic map manuscripts and scientist text manuscripts to make the presentation of the data consistent with style and accepted scientific practice.
  • Marking geologic map manuscripts and scientific text manuscripts for format and style.
  • Collaborating with a team of scientists and other staff members on preparation of geologic map manuscripts scientific liaison between authors and other PSC staff members.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
  • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geologist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology. In addition to the geology course work included in the degree, it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in geology plus 20 additional semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-07:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-07 level:

**One year of successfully completed graduate level education (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours or the equivalent) in geology or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled. **OR Superior Academic Achievement based on undergraduate study. **OR one year of appropriate professional experience that is in or related to the duties of this position is qualifying if it is equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to at least the GS-5 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. Examples of GS-5 level experience could include writing geologic reports; constructing geologic maps; copyediting content for consistency with other internal or external publications; and preparing geologic maps as an author or coauthor. This work experience would have involved receiving clear, specific, and detailed instructions as to the methods, procedures, and guidelines to use for geologic mapping, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and editorial style.

For GS-09:

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:

**Two years of progressively higher-level graduate education (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a master's degree in geology or other directly related field of study or master's or equivalent graduate degree in geology or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.

**OR one year of appropriate professional experience in geology that is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include copyediting geologic reports from other geologists into a larger compilation report; editing a regular newsletter, journal, or other professional communication product for public dissemination; or reviewing and editing other people's maps and text as part of preparing these products for publication. This work experience would have involved reviewing submitted work for technical mistakes not only in the geology, but also grammar, spelling, and punctuation; using some judgment in applying editorial style and consistency across multiple products from different authors; and would have required a good working knowledge of the principles of writing and editing, including sentence structure, overall organization and clarity, and editorial style.

Selective Placement Factor: In addition to meeting the qualification requirements described above, applicants must also meet the following selective placement factor to be qualified:

  • Must have successfully completed a geology field camp equivalent to a full-semester course (3 or more credits) that involved independent mapping (including preparation of stratigraphic columns and structural cross sections) in an area of six or more diverse lithologies and complex structural relationships (folds and faults). You must submit proof of completion with your application.
You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
