This position is located in the Washington Office of the National Park Service. The incumbent serves as the Assistant Director, Native American Affairs, and reports directly to the Director. The incumbent has Service wide responsibilities for representing the NPS, its programs, and the Director to Indian Tribal Governments and other Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian groups and related organizations.

The major duties of the Native American Affairs Liaison position include but are not limited to the following:

Promotion to the full performance level is neither guaranteed nor implied and will be based solely on your ability to satisfactorily perform the work of the position, existing work at the higher grade level, and recommendation by the position's supervisor.
Physical Demands: The work varies from sedentary to actively challenging. Depending on the assignment, physical activities include balancing, bending, climbing, hiking, sitting, standing, stooping, and walking as necessary, possibly on rough terrain and during inclement weather, could be required.
Potential for frequent travel throughout the year in response to requests from the Director, Regional Directors, national and international organizations, superintendents, and others requires considerable physical and mental stamina.
Extensive day and overnight travel are possible, including via privately owned and government vehicles, boats, and commercial air transportation.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in office settings with a combination of office and field work including speeches, negotiations, and conferences, on an irregular schedule, throughout the Service.
Occasional, periodic, and regular recurring travel to NPS parks, tribal facilities, reservations, and/or other field settings is required, and international travel is possible.
Outdoor field work may be performed in a wide range of environments found on Indian reservations and may include tribal consultation meetings and ceremonies in remote locations, wilderness conditions, and is subject to extreme terrain variation and inclement weather.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
