The incumbent serves as the archeologist for Everglades and Dry Tortugas National Parks. Both parks contain significant archeologlcal and historic resources, including National Historic sites, National Historic Districts, National Historic Landmarks, and World Heritage Sites. Some of the archeological sites in both parks Include submerged resources and the incumbent
must be an NPS diver to access them. Previous experience or education in the study of submerged archeological sites and prehistoric and historic archeologlcal sites of Florida are a requirement of the position.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to [XX] nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.

Qualifications

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: This position performs scuba diving, and an Instructor or Master SCUBA diver certification or an Advanced Open Water or Open Water SCUBA diver certification from a nationally recognized dive certification organization is required. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position.

To qualify for this position at the GS-9 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following basic qualifications requirements by close of the announcement:

EDUCATION: Successful completion of 4-years course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: 1) History of archeology, 2) Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa, 3) Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development, 4) Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques, 5) Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work. AND six semester hours of related course work in: 1) geography, geology, or cultural geography; 2) history, historiography, or historical archeology; 3) environmental studies; 4) scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or 5) surveying; AND Archeological field school. You must include transcripts.

RELATED CURRICULUM: Successful completion of 4-years course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a related curriculum: anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics); history; American studies; or a related discipline, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A (including archeological field school). You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of college level education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, For example, six months of the specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement), and 24 semester hours of directly related graduate level education from an accredited college or university (50% of the qualifying education). The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.
-OR-
EXPERIENCE: At least four years of specialized experience in archeological work that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project. You must include hours per week worked.

Subsequent to meeting the basic requirements above, applicants must also meet at least one of the minimum qualification requirements listed below:

EXPERIENCE: To qualify for GS-9 you must have at least one year of specialized experience at least equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience may include: conducting archaeological surveys, testing, excavation, and monitoring of projects; performing field inspections, research, and project resource assessments; review cultural resource permits and fieldwork plans; utilizing computerized systems to process, and analyze archaeological data; plan long range protection and management of cultural resources. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or master's or equivalent graduate degree. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, For example, six months of the specialized experience described above (50% of the experience requirement), and 18 semester hours of directly related graduate level education from an accredited college or university (50% of the qualifying education) The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level(s) of this announcement.

Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity Including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. This position requires SCUBA diving and the incumbent must be able to acquire and maintain DOI diving credentials (the "Blue Card"). Documentary research and report
writing work are sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.

Working Conditions: Work Is performed both Indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including underwater, on flrellnes, In swamps, and in forests. Boating, air-boating and flying in fixed-winged aircraft and helicopters is likely.
