The position serves as the Superintendent of Channel Islands National Park, located in Ventura. CA. The Superintendent plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates the operation and management of the park in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, policies, agreements and with input from various park stakeholders. The superintendent exercises a key role in external relations and promotes a high level of public engagement, understanding, trust, and support for the park and the National Park System as a whole.
Area information: Channel Islands National Park (CHIS) is located in Southern California off the coast of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. The park is comprised of five islands of varied size, topography and is a popular destination for camping, day visits, sea kayaking, world class SCUBA diving, boating, surfing, whale watching and fishing. Islands are remote, undeveloped, and have primitive camping facilities with limited infrastructure. The closest metropolitan area is Ventura, CA; located 70 miles north of Los Angeles / 30 miles south of Santa Barbara. Shopping facilities, schools, churches, hospitals, and other services are within a 15-mile radius. There are several major universities and colleges in the surrounding areas. Mild climate with some fog and occasional rain in winter.
There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level(s) of this announcement.
Physical Demands: The work is primarily sedentary. Occasional field trips and studies of island issues require travel by boat and aircraft, occasional surf landings, and hiking on the rough and rugged terrain of the islands. Occasional travel to the islands can require long duty hours.
Working Conditions: Most work is performed in an office setting although some outdoor activity is required. Trips are necessary to inspect the islands and to understand the resources. Incumbent may occasionally be required to stay on the islands for several days at a time, or stay on a boat. Travel to the islands is via boat, fixed-wing aircraft?? or helicopter and travel will expose incumbent to a wide variety of environments.
Telework: The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
