These positions are Full-Time temporary positions not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours (about 6 months) in a service year. Positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Duties

Help

The Incumbent operates large, complex riding lawn mowers that have multiple or independently controlled cutting decks, and/or specially designed mowers that operate on slopes; lawn and garden tractors with various specialty attachments such as gardening attachments, trenchers, snow plowing or removal equipment. Operates other types of equipment (e.g., lawn edging equipment, trimmers, brush cutters, brush chippers, etc?) and hand tools (e.g., shovels, picks, pulaskis, digging bars, rakes, etc?), to maintain buildings, grounds, roads, and trails.
Carries out laboring assignment(s) which require knowledge of several steps, phases, or detailed procedures and a practical knowledge of project requirements and objectives (e.g., preparing ground, laying sod, planting flowers or shrubs, and using drawings to establish a planting pattern and/or design, or similar labor endeavors which require the knowledge and ability to complete various steps, phases or procedures to accomplish a complete assignment).
Loads and unloads supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, dollies, etc. Moves furniture, remove and sets signs, paints picnic tables and signs, rakes and waters lawns, trims trees and shrubbery, picks up litter, and cleans and repairs fire pits.
Digs ditches and trenches with pick and shovel. Moves heavily loaded wheelbarrows and hand trucks; uses heavy type power mowers including adjusting blades, cleaning and oiling.
Operates vehicles over Federal, state, and country roads and city streets in all traffic conditions, and performs minor operator maintenance on light duty motor vehicles such as pickup trucks, flatbed trucks, carryalls, sedans, crew cab pickup trucks, which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of up to 4500 kilograms (10,000 pounds).
Performs routine custodial tasks on buildings and grounds such as cleaning restrooms.

AREA INFORMATION
Assateague Island National Seashore is located on the Atlantic coast of Maryland and Virginia, approximately 130 miles east of Washington, D.C. The area is largely rural, with numerous small towns and the seaside resorts. Complete shopping and medical services are available, as are public and private schools. The small town of Berlin, MD and the resort community of Ocean City, MD are located within 10 miles and offer medical facilities, entertainment, shopping and restaurants. Salisbury, MD, about 30 miles away, has a university, a large hospital, shopping and restaurants. Summers are hot and humid, with high temperatures commonly in the 90's. Winters are mild with little snow and daytime temperatures usually above freezing.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old due to the hazardous work (ie. work with chainsaws, driving a motor vehicle, etc.)

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

  1. Ability to do the work of Laborer-Motor Vehicle Operator WG-3502-05 without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT)

Physical Demands: The work performed requires the exertion of moderate to very heavy physical effort. The work involves lifting and moving objects over 50 pounds, and in some cases, carrying 80 to 100 pounds (or more) with assistance.

Working Conditions: Outside work is usually performed under all kinds of weather conditions. Indoor work is often accomplished in office buildings or in well-lighted, heated, and ventilated areas such as warehouses, loading docks, or trade shops. Frequently exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, dust, and dirt and the possibility of bruises, muscle strains, cuts and scrapes. Work requires the employee to follow proper safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses, and steel-toe shoes to avoid possible hazards in the work area.
