Summary

These position are located in Harpers Ferry Center, Interpretive Design Center for the National Park Service. This Office works in close collaboration with parks to develop and produce a wide array of media products in support of the mission of the National Park Service.Projects are broad in scope and require critical thinking and diagnostic skills to evaluate, comprehend, and convey content. Completed products provide high-quality and appropriate media representations that satisfy agency and park goals and objectives for interpreting parks.

These are Full-Time TERM positions. Appointment to these positions will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed thirteen months, with possible extensions up to a total of four years without further competition.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Help

You will:

  • collaborate with parks and contractors to develop and produce an array of media products in support of the mission of the National Park Service.
  • work with media indoor and outdoor museum exhibits such as; panels and interactive devices an two-dimensional exhibits.
  • produce visual information designed to engage a broad spectrum of visitors to effectively communicate key interpretive concepts and other information that helps to ensure a safe and enlightened visit.
  • design small to medium in size and complexity exhibits, interactive elements, waysides, and other visual media.
  • work with assignments that are often large in scale and may involve complex or controversial themes and objectives, unusual or innovative design and/or presentation techniques, and complex production logistics.
  • travel to project sites, design studios, and fabrication shops.

Qualifications

Experience: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope anc responsibility to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience is typically in or related to the position to be filled and must include: planning the preparation and use of photographs, illustrations, drawings, i nd other art work, charts, diagrams, dioramas, maps, slides, overlays, and other kinds of visual material for use in communicating information through visual means; designing, managing the development and/or overseeing the production of museum quality three-dimension rial museum exhibits; apply best practices to ensure interpretive themes, concepts and stories are easily understandable by diverse audiences; and "universal design" theories are applied to all media in order to reach as diverse an audience as possible.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and .kills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for a I qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for y o jr work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level(s) of this announcement.

Additional information

Physical Demands: Work is mostly sedentary, with some walking in the parks during scoping and pre-design activities, and final/post inspection phases. Travel to parks may expose incumbent to a varying range of temperatures, conditions, and physical exertion much of which can be controlled by advance planning. Work can be stressful due to multiple project demands and deadlines.

Working Conditions: Work is generally performed in an office setting. Frequent travel to project sites, other design offices, or fabricators is expected.
