Duties

This critical/sensitive position serves as an assistant to the Center Manager in the Alaska Regional Emergency Communications Center. The Supervisory Dispatcher serves as the assistant to the Communication Center Manager for complex, multi-jurisdictional, all-risk incidents for all park units within the Alaska Region as well as other jurisdictions and/or agencies.

The Supervisory Dispatcher trains and gives guidance to dispatchers using SOP's (Standard Operating Procedures), in the daily activities of the center. Also provides training with all telecommunication systems such as CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) system, multi frequency radio systems and telecommunication recording equipment. The communication center has a wide complexity of activities, flight plans, back country itineraries, float plans, flight following and back country itinerary procedures for check in, law enforcement activity using secure networks searching data on persons, vehicles, boats, weapons and property. The Supervisory Dispatcher is responsible to see that all dispatchers are provided proper training and support in the daily functions of performing public safety dispatching duties.

  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.

  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to a few nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect either full-time or 40 hours per week. If a part-time work schedule is reflected, the hours must be annotated to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience.

SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position performs public safety dispatching, and the ability to pass a background investigation, with no disqualifying offenses, is required. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position.

To qualify for this position at the GS-9 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-8 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: working at a complex, multi-jurisdictional, all-risk incidents at a regional dispatch center and supporting law enforcement, aviation, structural fire, medical, search and rescue, other emergency and non-emergency service functions with Federal, State, and Local agencies. Experience in using SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for guidance and training. Knowledgeable of CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) systems multi frequency radio systems, telecommunication recording equipment, flight following and back country itinerary procedures.
You must include hours per week worked or work schedule.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate. .

Physical Demands: Thenature of the work is primarily sedentary. Occasional bending and lifting is required during movement of materials and supply restocking. Stress from emergency situations, multiple incidents and long hours are present. During this time, intense concentration is needed to perform properly. There are frequent demands for rapid decision-making.

Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily in the dispatch center where control and direction must be maintained during emergency situations. Work Is normally performed in a specialized office setting. Multi-channel radios are continuously monitored and multi-line telephones constantly ring, resulting in frequent periods of excessive and constant noise. Demands by internal and external customers during peak incident loads will be demanding. This creates a potentially hectic and stressful work environment Incumbent must be able to concentrate on work projects amidst noise, Interruptions and the movements of others. Some exposure to hazards occurs In flying, inspections, and field trips required by the job.
