Serving as a Maintenance Mechanic WG-4749-10 makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) team and mission. This position is located in the Office of the Associate Director for Training Ops, Training Management Operations Directorate, Office of Charleston Operations, Charleston Administration Division, located in Charleston, South Carolina.

The primary purpose of this position is is to serve as a Maintenance Mechanic responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and continuous operation of FLETC training facilities and support facilities by installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, renovating, and operating building and facility systems.

Typical duties include:

  • Maintaining and repairing building and facility systems (e.g., electrical, mechanical, safety devices, etc.)
  • Monitoring facility operations and supporting training requirements to ensure facilities remain safe, operational and available for law enforcement activities.
  • Performing preventative maintenance, testing and inspections to ensure safety requirements are met and improve operating efficiencies.
  • Supporting facility renovations and minor construction projects, to include carpentry, drywall, painting, concrete work, demolition, road repair, equipment installation, HVAC installation, and operation of heavy equipment.
  • Following safety, environmental and hazardous material requirements to dispose of waste in accordance with applicable requirements.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standard. Screen-out Job Element: Ability to perform work of a Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision.

The job elements can be assessed using the following types of experience:

Assisting with or performing routine maintenance, repair, installation, troubleshooting, and renovation tasks on building or facility systems such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, piping, automated controls, safety systems, chiller/boiler systems, or related equipment. Technical expertise gained through experience of having actively performed in following instructions and specifications, using basic measuring instruments and tools, working with common maintenance materials, following safety procedures, and assisting with related renovation or minor construction work such as carpentry, drywall, painting, concrete work, demolition, road repair, equipment installation, or heavy equipment operation.

Working Conditions: Works inside in areas that are usually crowded and noisy, and outside, sometimes in bad weather. The Maintenance Mechanic is exposed to the possibility of electrical shock, cuts, bruises, and broken bones. Also works on scaffolding, high ladders, or rooftops. The Maintenance Mechanic may be required to work shift work and/or weekends. May be required to start work earlier, stay later than normal working hours, or be called back for emergencies. The Maintenance Mechanic complies with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification for handling of refrigerants and must be able to possess a valid universal license approved by the EPA, if refrigerant work is required. Hazards may require wearing full-faced pressurized breathing mask, which requires the Maintenance Mechanic to be clean-shaven. Occasionally required to wear protective clothing where there is the possibility of exposure to gunpowder, toxic refrigerant, and/or other hazardous materials. Required to operate government vehicles to travel between work sites. This position is deemed Emergency Essential in accordance with FLETC Directive 70-90.F, Hurricane Response Plan dated August 19, 2019.

Physical Demands: Continually handles objects weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally may lift and carry items that weigh about 50 pounds. Considerable standing, stooping, and bending is required. Also works on ladders
and scaffolds, which require the incumbent to work overhead or in stretched, cramped, or awkward positions.
