Summary

The primary purpose of the Motor Vehicle Operator (Seasonal) is to operate one or more motor vehicles, which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of more than 10,000 pounds and up to 26,000 pounds.

These positions may be filled for a seasonal period, up to 1560 hours, but can vary due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: October 2026 - March 2027

Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following:

  • Operates and performs operator maintenance on one or more motor vehicles including platform trucks, van trucks, stake trucks, dump trucks, passenger shuttle vans, and cargo vans.
  • Operates dump trucks to haul earth, gravel, sand, and similar construction materials or debris such as logs, stumps, and stone.
  • May be assigned to assist journeyman workers in performing duties common to the trades of plumbing, carpentry, painting, and electrical.
  • May assist in the performance of duties related to other trades as required.
  • Does manual labor tasks, such as, pulling, and digging grass between bricks and replacing sand between brick, cleaning drainage ditches, lifting, and emptying trash containers, cleaning restrooms, picking up litter, cleaning picnic grills, etc.; works roads and trails in connection with raking and graveling.

  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license will be required in such cases.
    • You must be at least 18 years of age or older to operate government vehicles.
  • You may be required to complete training, obtain and maintain a government credit card with travel and purchase authority.
  • You must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Applicants must be physically fit and, as required in the Office of Personnel Management Qualifications Handbook X-118C, must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the job elements listed below to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying. To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

Snowmobile Certification. You Must provide documentation that you are in possession of this certification either in your resume or by uploading the certification with your application. If you do not provide this documentation, you will be rated as ineligible.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE 1039 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment combined total of 1039 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1039 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1039 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1039 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

Physical Demands: Moderate physical effort may be required in making couplings between the vehicle and towed equipment. Considerable physical effort may be required in backing of vehicles, to change tires, and make limited emergency repairs. Required to frequently lift items weighing over 50 pounds. Work also involves climbing of ladders, scaffolding, and working in and around power tools and equipment.

Working Conditions: Incumbent is required to work outside and is exposed to extreme hot and cold temperatures. Operates vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents.
