Duties

Help

Duties for the Data Scientist position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Serves as an OSHA expert in the analysis and evaluation of occupation associated injury and illness data.
  • Designing and conducting studies to identify emerging occupational safety and health threats.
  • Representing the agency on work related injury and illness data committees, intra-agency workgroups, advisory panels and boards, task forces, public forums, and public hearings to address questions related to occupational epidemiology, data evaluation and analysis.
  • Leading inter and intra-agency committees and workgroups on occupation associated injury and illness data analysis and epidemiology.
  • Advising OSHA senior leadership on the design of proposed health science analytic projects and studies.

Qualifications

The Data Science series has an Individual Occupational Requirement. All applicants must meet the 'Individual Occupational Requirement' and the 'Specialized Experience' as described below to qualify for the Data Scientist position.

INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT (IOR) for the Data Scientist:
A. Degree: Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown in paragraph A above, plus additional education or appropriate experience.

In addition to meeting the Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR), applicants must meet the following specialized experience:

Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-13, in the Federal Service.

Qualifying specialized experience for the Data Scientist includes:

  • Applying the methods, principles, and characteristics of occupational injury, illness, and/or fatality epidemiology to assess the validity and consistency of data reporting methods..
  • Using quantitative and qualitative statistical methods for the analysis of occupational safety and health injury and illness data.
  • Preparing reports and providing recommendations regarding occupational safety and health based on analytical findings.

Education
