Duties

Help

As a Evidence Control Specialist, your typical work assignments may include:

  • Working with vendors to schedule and coordinate the disposal or storage of evidence.
  • Serving as a point of contact and provides guidance, processes, and procedures with regards to the Field Division's evidence program to all personnel, other federal agencies, and state and local counterparts.
  • Responsible for the receipt, retention, and disposition of evidence for the Field Division Office, which includes all items seized and recovered which are expected to be introduced in court and/or subject to chain-of-custody attack, regardless of size, as collected.
  • Maintaining files and processes paperwork while monitoring all division evidence inventory levels and movement using manual or computer automated systems.

  • Work requires considerable physical exertion such as walking, standing, stooping, reaching and the recurrent lifting of packages and/or objects of weight more than 50 pounds
  • Work may require long hours including nights, weekends, holidays, and after hours.
  • Work is performed in an office setting, warehouse, or a storage facility. Visits to other offices and storage facilities will be required to inspect evidence storage.
  • Protective clothing and gear, and observance of safety precautions are required when participating in the destruction of evidence or accessing facilities with exposure to potential hazards.

Applicants applying for the GS-9 must meet one of the following requirements:

A. Have at least one full year of qualifying specialized experience that is at least equivalent in difficulty and complexity to work performed at the GS-07 grade level. Specialized experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Ensuring evidence is appropriately documented, packaged, stored, andaccounted for 2) Preparing and retrieving a variety of quarterly and annual reports for accountability and reconciliation of seized evidence; 3) Coordinating with individuals who have evidence management responsibilities across Field Divisions; and 4) Maintaining files and processes paperwork while monitoring all division evidence inventory levels and movement using manual or computer automated systems.

OR

Education: Have a Master's or equivalent graduate degree -or- two (2) full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree; or LL.B. or J.D., if related.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Applicants applying for the GS-11 must meet one of the following requirements:

A. Have at least one full year of qualifying specialized experience that is at least equivalent in difficulty and complexity to work performed at the GS-09 grade level. Specialized experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:1) Strategizing procedures, and methods for cataloging, maintaining, tracking, and reporting evidence activities and other administrative matters; 2) Preparing and retrieving a variety of quarterly and annual reports for accountability and reconciliation of seized evidence; 3) Maintaining a record system to document and maintain a log of precise location and activity of all evidence charged out to authorized personnel;4) Gathering data for analysis and information sharing (e.g., queries or formats data); Assisting with on-site inspections in the division and reporting offices and documents or consolidates reports for submission to the Special Agent; and 5) Coordinates and briefs selected personnel on procedures for conducting annual physical inventory of all non-drug evidence.

OR

Education: Have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree -or- three (3) full academic years of graduate level education leading to such a degree; or LL.M., if related.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
