Duties

Help

Major Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Applies technical knowledge and expertise to evaluate workplace conditions, advise others, and resolve technical issues.
  • Plans and conducts inspections or compliance reviews of worksites, identifying hazards and recommending corrective actions.
  • Investigates incidents, including fatalities and serious injuries, and determines areas requiring immediate intervention.
  • Collects and analyzes samples from worksites, prepares detailed reports, and recommends controls for identified hazards.
  • Calculates and adjusts penalties for violations using automated systems, considering severity and probability of harm.
  • Communicates findings, gains compliance, and provides technical advice to employers and employee organizations, including testifying in legal proceedings.

Qualifications

You must meet the Basic Requirements listed in the Education Requirements section and the Specialized Experience to qualify for Compliance Safety & Health Officer, as described below.

THIS POSITION HAS A BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT. ALL APPLICANTS MUST MEET THIS REQUIREMENT IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED.

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
  • A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
  • Certification from the Board for Global EHS Credentialing (formerly American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH)).

Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.

Evaluation of Education: All science or engineering courses offered in fulfillment of the above requirements must be acceptable for credit toward the completion of a standard 4-year professional curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in science or engineering at an accredited college or university.

Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal Service.

A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must clearly indicate the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such position. Specialized Experience: In addition to meeting the individual occupational requirement, applicants must demonstrate 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level, in the Federal or Private Sector. Specialized Experience is described as experience that has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. Examples of specialized experience are as follows:

  • Writing occupational safety or occupational health reports.
  • Conducting file or record reviews, to include case files of previous occupational health investigations, inspections or complaints.
  • Planning and conducting evaluations of workplace operations involving potentially hazardous environmental conditions.
  • Testifying during or working with counsel in the development of litigation pursuant to occupational safety and/or occupational health cases.

Education is not a substitution for experience at the GS-12 level.
