Help

  • Analyzes criminal activity, resource vandalism and violation problems occurring on public lands.
  • Performs investigations, apprehends suspects and violators, performs surveillance and makes enforcement contacts.
  • Develops and implements solutions ensuring consistency with national and state policies for carrying out law enforcement activities pertaining to public lands and natural resources.
  • Coordinates and enforces local law enforcement programs with resource management plans and activities.
  • Works in cooperation with Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies.
  • Provides strategic and tactical law enforcement advice and guidance to Field Mgr. and management team in development and implementation of resourcemanagement plans.
  • Represent the BLM to the community. Works in cooperation with State, regional, county, city and other Federal officials.
  • Presents testimony, prepares reports and correspondence.
  • Speaks to user groups, service organizations, schools and others regarding BLM Law Enforcement.
  • Assists in developing interpretive goals to promote resource protection.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

  • Prior to appointment, you must be determined physically fit by an authorized government physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties; and also pass a medical examination (which includes vision, hearing, cardiovascular, and mobility of extremities) given by an authorized government physician. You will also be required to undergo periodic medical examinations throughout employment.
  • Prior to appointment, the people selected for these positions must be determined physically fit by an authorized physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties, pass a medical examination, and pass the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB). The PEB is a fitness test consisting of five different components: 1) agility run - measures the ability to get up from the ground and sprint while changing directions; 2) bench press - measures upper body strength for one repetition; 3) 1.5 mile run - measures cardio/respiratory fitness; 4) sit and reach - measures flexibility in the lower back, legs and shoulders; and 5) body composition - measures body fat. Prior to appointment, selectees will be tested in all five components, and must pass the agility run, bench press and 1.5 mile run in the 25th percentile.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • The position to which you will be appointed is subject to a financial disclosure reporting requirement and you will be required to complete a new entrant Confidential Financial Disclosure Report (OGE Form 450) within 30 days of your appointment.
Conditions of Employment:
  • Selectee must successfully complete within 1 year of hire, or have previously completed within the last 3 years, the Basic Law Enforcement for Land Management Agencies Program at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Glynco, GA or equivalent. If basic academy was completed more than 3 years previously, selectee must provide documentation of continuous 40 hour in-service completion.
  • Maximum Entry Age: The maximum entry-age for this position shall not exceed age 37, unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian law enforcement [or firefighter, if applicable] experience or you are a preference eligible veteran. If you are a preference eligible veteran, you may be eligible for this position after your 37th birthday. You must supply a copy of your Defense Department Form 214 (DD-214) along with Standard Form 15 (if applicable) and any associated documentation in accordance with the instructions in this vacancy announcement. Failure to provide this documentation with your application will result in the loss of eligibility to receive a waiver of the maximum entry age requirement.
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-07/22/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

Selective Factors: Applicants must meet ALL of the following to qualify:
  • This is a primary position covered by enhanced retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS) which stipulate mandatory retirement at age 57 after 20 years of service. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age and must not have reached their 37th birthday upon appointment to this position. Two exceptions are allowed: 1) an applicant has prior Federal service in a primary covered position sufficient to complete 20 years of service on or before the mandatory retirement age of 57; or 2) an applicant is a qualified veterans' preference eligible, in which case the MEA is waived and their corresponding retirement age may be higher than 57 after completing 20 years of service.

GL-7 Applicants must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
  • EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL/GS-05 level, performing at least three of the following duties: Assisting senior officers in investigating criminal activity involving violence against a person, theft, destruction of property, or trespassing; Issuing citations and assisting in filing criminal complaints; Preparing documentation for court proceedings and/or providing testimony; Conducting investigations that require locating, securing, and protecting crime scenes; Gathering and/or seizing evidence.. You must include hours per week worked.
  • EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full academic year of graduate-level education toward a master's degree (or possess an equivalent graduate degree or superior academic achievement). This education demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position. One full year of graduate-level education is equivalent to 18 semester hours. You must include transcripts.

  • Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. Only graduate education can be credited towards the education requirement. You must include transcripts.
GL-09 Applicants must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
  • EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL/GS-07 level, performing at least four of the following duties: Investigating criminal activity involving violence against a person, theft, destruction of property, or trespassing; Issuing citations and assisting in filing criminal complaints; Preparing documentation for court proceedings and/or providing testimony; Conducting investigations that involve locating, securing, and protecting crime scenes; Gathering and/or seizing evidence. You must include hours per week worked.
  • EDUCATION: Successful completion of a master's degree (or an equivalent graduate degree), or two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree. This education demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position. You must include transcripts.

  • Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours or equivalent earned towards a graduate degree, in excess of 18 semester hours, and divide by 18 semester hours or equivalent. Then, take the number of months of experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.
GS-11 Applicants must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
  • EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GL/GS-09 level, performing at least five of the following duties: Investigating criminal activity involving violence against a person, theft, destruction of property, or trespassing; Preparing investigation reports by documenting findings and obtaining witness statements; Issuing citations and assisting in filing criminal complaints; Preparing documentation for court proceedings and/or providing testimony; Conducting investigations that involve locating, securing, and protecting crime scenes; Preparing law enforcement work plans that incorporate resource management objectives and concerns.   • EDUCATION: Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree. This education demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position. You must include transcripts.

  • Successful completion of a COMBINATION of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours or equivalent earned towards a graduate degree, in excess of 36 semester hours, and divide by 18 semester hours or equivalent. Education

Probationary Period: As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated

This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest the agency will consider:

  • your performance and conduct
  • the needs and interests of the agency
  • whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government and
  • whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service
Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized. Law Enforcement Commission: This position requires applicants to possess or be able to possess a valid Type I Law Enforcement Commission (or equivalent), which requires completing training from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC).
  • All Law Enforcement Rangers who are new to the BLM are required to complete the introduction to Resource Protection Training Program within their first two years of assignment.
  • All Law Enforcement Rangers will complete the Land Management Police Training program (LMPT) at the FLETC or an approved equivalent law enforcement training school before they are delegated law enforcement authority. This training must be completed within the first 12 months of appointment.
  • Successful completion of the BLM's Field Training and Evaluation Program (FTEP) must occur within one year of receiving delegation of law enforcement authority. Failure to complete the FTEP will result in the loss of law enforcement delegation and/or termination of employment.
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent, temporary, or term position. A Federal employee who is transferring to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) from another component, bureau or Federal agency and who does not meet the conditions under 5 CFR §575.102 is not eligible for a recruitment incentive.

A Relocation Incentive May Be Authorized for a Federal employee when the employee must move, as directed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) either through a management directed reassignment or selection for employment, to a different location at least 50 miles away from the one where his/her position of record held at time of selection is currently located, due to a need of the NPS. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

Promotion to the full performance level is neither guaranteed nor implied and will be based solely on your ability to satisfactorily perform the work of the position, existing work at the higher grade level, and recommendation by the position's supervisor.

Physical Demands: The incumbent must be able to safely utilize firearms, non-lethal weapons, and defensive tactics in the conduct of daily activities. The work requires considerable strenuous physical exertion, e.g., long periods of standing, crawling, walking, and running over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces and through wooded or brush areas, performing these activities day or night, when the incumbent may be required to respond immediately from a sedentary activity to an extremely arduous activity.

The duties of this position are so rigorous that a physical examination is required to ensure that the employee assigned can perform the duties without physical injury to self or others. Employees must meet the arduous physical and medical standards identified in BLM law enforcement policy.

The incumbent must be prepared, at all times, to defend himself/herself and others against physical and armed attack, including the use of physical violence or, as a last resort, deadly force.

Working Conditions: Work is performed both in an office setting and outdoors with exposure to hazardous and environmentally adverse conditions. Fieldwork is normally performed alone in isolated areas and for extended periods of time. Many investigations occur in isolated areas of the public lands. The remote areas are in high mountains as well as desert areas, canyons, and other types of rough terrain. This type of work involves potentially high risks with personal exposure to dangerous situations, including possible physical attack or other uncontrollable conditions.

The incumbent is regularly exposed to temperature and weather extremes, and will travel on foot or by specialty vehicles, e.g., four-wheel drive, motorcycles, and all-terrain vehicles, aircraft, or horseback to these remote locations to gather evidence and to arrest violators.
