Duties

Help

This position focuses on building foundational competencies needed to design, develop, test, and implement software applications, data solutions, and web/internet services. It involves developmental assignments that prepare selectees for progression to higher-level responsibilities within the IT Management Series.

Competencies

As a trainee, you are expected to show basic proficiency in core competencies. These competencies support the work you will perform as you learn, take on more challenging tasks, and progress toward full proficiency at higher grade levels.

  1. Attention to Detail -Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
  2. Customer Service -Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
  3. Interpersonal Skills -Shows understanding, friendliness, courtesy, tact, empathy, concern, and politeness to others; develops and maintains effective relationships with others; may include effectively dealing with individuals who are difficult, hostile, or distressed; relates well to people from varied backgrounds and different situations.

Specialized Experience

Specialized experience is defined as the knowledge, skills, and abilities/competencies which demonstrate the likelihood of successful performance in the position. This experience is typically gained in the IT field or through the performance of work where the primary concern is IT.

Applicants may qualify for this GS-7 IT position based on meeting the competencies above and demonstrating one year of specialized experience assisting with one or more of the following:
  • development tasks using Java, .NET, C#, C++, Python, JavaScript, or HTML;
  • computational programming tasks using R, SAS, SPSS, Stata, MATLAB, or Mathematica.

Education

Applicants must have graduated, within the past two years, (with an associate, bachelor, master, professional, doctorate, diploma, vocational, technical degree, or certificate, etc.) from a qualifying educational institution or career or technical educational program including registered Apprenticeship Programs, Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, Job Corps, Climate Corps).

To be eligible for an appointment, you must meet requirement A or B.

A. Completed all requirements for a diploma, associate, bachelor, master, professional, doctorate, vocational, or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution or career or technical education program (including registered Apprenticeship Programs, Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, Job Corps, Climate Corps) within the previous two years;

OR

B. Was released or discharged from active duty within the previous two years, where the applicant is a veteran who, due to a military service obligation, was precluded from applying for a recent graduate position during any portion of the two-year eligibility period following completion of his/her degree or certificate requirements, provided that not more than six years have transpired since the applicant completed the requirements for a degree or certification. You must submit an academic transcript from your academic institution showing the date that you most recently completed the academic requirements described above.
