• Manage the care of patients with complex and multifaceted medical and surgical needs, applying advanced clinical expertise and judgment.
• Conduct comprehensive assessments, identifying subtle and critical changes in patient conditions, and implementing sophisticated nursing interventions.
• Proficient in managing high-acuity conditions, such as post-surgical complications, sepsis, and multi-system organ failure, ensuring compliance with evidence-based protocols.
• Manage pediatric conditions, such as newborn hyperbilirubinemia, asthma, and upper respiratory conditions requiring continuous oxygen and airway monitoring.
• Provide ongoing and in-depth assessment of patient problems, strengths, and limitations, assessing condition, review of data collected through observations of variations from norms, and precise calculation of fluid levels and vital signs.
• Interpret lab results and other findings and reports them to the healthcare provider when those findings indicate a deterioration of the patient’s condition.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement comprehensive care plans for high-risk patients.
• Provide leadership within the unit, mentoring junior nursing staff and serving as a resource for complex clinical situations.
• Promote quality assurance initiatives within the unit, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards, regulatory requirements, and organizational policies.

• Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11.
• This position requires incumbent to obtain and maintain Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross.
• Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
• This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
• The duties of this position may require the incumbent to work uncommon tours of duty hours such as, on-call, working either fixed or rotating shifts, evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
• Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
• Must obtain and maintain current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training and certification from the American Heart Association or Military Training Network.

Basic Requirement for Nurse (Clinical/Medical-Surgical)

Degree: A graduate or higher-level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

Foreign Degree: A degree from a Foreign Nursing School. Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017, or before. Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Education/Experience: A diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program and possession of at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or above) which includes performing float and staff nursing care; and medical treatment services directly and significantly impacting patients varying from neonates/pediatric through geriatric.

OR

Education: A PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field, completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) from a professional nursing program,

OR

3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education from a professional nursing program.
