Duties

Help

DUTY 1:

Performs Career Broadening assignment by providing expert meteorological consultation to staff and personnel of the AFMC IDO and various AFMC organizations, DoD Program Offices, and Joint Agencies. Also advises affiliated program offices and using commands.

DUTY 2:

In a Career Broadening capacity, provide advanced meteorological expertise to acquisition programs entering into or operating within any phase of the acquisition lifecycle, with particular emphasis on support to Capability Development (CD) and Development Planning (DP) and other activities performed prior to creating a Program of Record.

DUTY 3:

Performs Career Broadening assignments by providing meteorological support to integrated planning teams, researchers and system development teams to discern the impact and exploit the effects of the atmosphere and the space environment on a multitude of weapon systems and systems undergoing developmental and/or operational testing.

DUTY 4:

As a Career Broadener, participates in the daily operations of the AFMC IDO, specifically facilitating all efforts delegated by the branch chief or deputy branch chief. Helps the Capability Development Meteorology Branch establish objectives, sets short-term priorities, and adjusts priorities in accordance with project schedules and constraints.

DUTY 5:

In a career broadening capacity serves as a subject matter expert to various programs assigned by the Capability Development Meteorology Branch Chief, represents AFMC IDO at technical meetings and conferences with environmental-support agencies and industry that deal with atmospheric effects on weapons systems.

  • Positions are established specifically to provide developmental experience designed to broaden the skills and/or enhance the leadership perspective of a high-potential, mid-level manager.
  • Career Broadening also provides training and developmental opportunities at various organizational levels.
  • These assignments offer the qualified candidate a unique assignment in that the candidates brings certain experience to the assignment while gaining new experiences in a different work environment
  • TEMPORARY PROMOTION: If the position is filled as a temporary promotion, upon completion of the career broadening assignment, the temporary promotion may lead to permanent promotion without further competition
  • This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program.
  • Work requires occasional travel away from the normal duty station, using military or commercial aircraft.
  • A non-disclosure agreement MUST be signed.

  • Required to handle and safeguard sensitive and/or classified information in accordance with regulations to reduce potential compromise.
  • Advanced degree in meteorology or atmospheric science is preferred due to the research-oriented and technical nature of staff-level meteorological support.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the Specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Professional and Scientific Positions.

BASIC REQUIREMENT OR INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Degree: meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included:

  1. At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of:
    1. Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics*;
    2. Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale);
    3. Three semester hours of physical meteorology; and
    4. Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation.
  2. Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.*
  3. Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations*.
  4. At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science.
FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Applicants must have served at least 52 weeks at the GS-12 or higher grade (or equivalent in an alternate pay system) within the Federal Civil Service to be considered for referral. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

1. Professional knowledge of diverse meteorological disciplines (including but not limited to climatology, radiative transfer, atmospheric dynamics, space environment, forecasting, and environmental modeling) to determine effects on emerging technologies and current/future weapon systems.

2. Knowledge of the DoD acquisition lifecycle and guidelines to include capability development and planning to integrate environmental requirements into the acquisition process, planning, and program documentation.

3. Knowledge of meteorological instrumentation, weather observing, and forecasting to identify operational support requirements for evolving systems.

4. Skill in using analytical tools and historical data to conduct high-confidence meteorological analyses and solve complex atmospheric problems.

5. Ability to communicate complex meteorological concepts to senior leaders, program managers, engineers, and multidisciplinary teams through briefings and reports.

6. Ability to provide expert consultation and professional advice to influence major contract decisions and policy for weapon systems design.

7. Ability to facilitate branch operations, manage project priorities, coordinate across diverse disciplines, and ensure adherence to security and safety protocols.

Additional information

PCS restrictions: An employee selected to make a PCS to a Career Broadening assignment is restricted from making a second PCS for 12 months.
