Duties

Help
  • Responsible for disseminating factual information to the public on multiple resource management programs and services.
  • Responds to inquiries concerning such matters as land status and ownership, land sales, timber sales, mining claims, permits, rights of way, and/or grazing permits.
  • Conducts research necessary to respond to written or in-person inquiries, and, when appropriate, refers complex technical inquiries to the proper resource specialist or other agencies.
  • Explain rules, policies, and procedures to members of the public and work to persuade contacts to cooperate.
  • Sells documents, maps, books, records, and various permits such as firewood and vegetative, Recreation passes/permits and other similar permits and materials.
  • Designated as a cashier/collection officer and is accountable for funds collected.
  • Orders and maintains inventories of products for publication for sale and public distributions.
  • Performs general office clerical work as assigned, such as travel; time and attendance; mail collection and distribution; answering phones and routine calls; etc. and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

GS-5: At least one (1) year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level (or equivalent) in the Federal Service (or private or public sectors) performing most or all of the following: (1) Providing written and oral information to the public on the mission and role of BLM, recreational opportunities, wild horse and burro adoptions, map purchases, area archeology and area history; (2) Responding to inquiries concerning such matters as land status and ownership, land sales, timber sales, mining claims, oil and gas leases and permits, rights of way, and/or grazing permits; (3) Assisting the public in determining land ownership and provides information by referencing Master Title Plats, Land Status Records and current mining claim microfiche; (4) Conducting research necessary to respond to written or in-person inquiries, and, when appropriate, refers complex technical inquiries to the proper sources of information; and (5) Researching requests for copies of documents, I.e., patents, plats, serial register pages and other related materials.

GS-06: At least one (1) year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level (or equivalent) in the Federal Service (or private or public sectors) performing most or all of the following: (1) Applying substantial knowledge and background on the mission and role of BLM to research and respond to a variety of complex inquiries concerning such matters as land status and ownership, land sales, timber sales, mining claims, oil and gas leases and permits, rights of way, and/or grazing permits; (2) Assisting customers by researching and copying case file folder, including mater tile plats, historic indexes, survey records, and patents; (3) Researching legal documents and preparing written responses or furnishing printed material related to land, mineral, mining claim recordation and recreation inquiries; (4) Providing legal copies of official records and documents for court proceedings or for filing with other government agencies; and (5) Ensures documents are accurate and complete and all avenues of research have been completed


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands/Work Environment: The work is typically sedentary. Some work may require periods of walking, standing, bending, or driving a motor vehicle. The incumbent may frequently lift relatively light boxes, materials, and supplies and /or carry file folder's copied materials, books, and other similar materials. Work is typically located in an adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated office environment. The work environment may involve everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, mail distribution centers, meeting and training rooms, libraries, or motor vehicles.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Bureau of Land Management

The BLM manages 245 million surface acres. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western States, including Alaska. We are a small bureau with a big and complex job, determining the best combination of uses for public lands based on good science and input from the public both in local communities and across the country.
