The Office of Science - Headquarters office works to deliver scientific discoveries and major scientific tools to transform our understanding of nature and advance the energy, economic, and national security of the United States. We are the nation's largest federal sponsor of basic research in the physical sciences and are a major supporter of research in such key scientific fields as physics, materials science, computing, and chemistry. We are also the lead federal agency supporting fundamental scientific research related to energy.

As a Supervisory Communications Specialist, you will:

  • Develop and implement integrated corporate strategies for communications and branding to support the organization's goals.
  • Plan, organize, evaluate, and direct the work of communications specialists and writer-editors, including assigning tasks, evaluating performance, and addressing employee relations.
  • Oversee web-based information technology and social media platforms, including content development and accessibility for the Office of Science's online presence.
  • Provide authoritative advice and recommendations on communications issues, ensuring efficient and effective documentation and communication of office activities and strategic plans.
  • Develop, write, and review articles, news releases, scripts, and other materials to communicate scientific concepts and organizational objectives to diverse audiences.

Qualifications

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-14 in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting ALL of the following:

  1. Developing communication strategies for complex programs or initiatives.
  2. Providing advice to senior-level leadership on critical communication and public affairs issues.
  3. Drafting and reviewing high-impact written communication products.
  4. Ensuring accountability for significant organizational communication outcomes.

NOTE: There is no substitution of education for specialized experience at the GS-15 level.

Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
