Duties

Help
  • You will serve as the Training Department Head, providing daily supervision, technical guidance, and operational oversight for one assigned active-duty military member.
  • You will develop and manage the training program for fundamental and advanced techniques in all aspects of tropical meteorology, tropical cyclone forecasting, and satellite analysis.
  • You will develop short, intermediate, and long-range training plans.
  • You will maintain, update, and develop new lesson plans and courses of instruction by utilizing expertise in the subject matter, understanding new developments and technologies and implementing them into the command training plans.
  • You will maintain comprehensive professional knowledge of the theories, principles, and techniques of meteorology, climatology, satellite remote sensing systems and imagery interpretation.
  • You will oversee the readiness program, assess mission effectiveness through training, inspections, and operational exercises, and integrate all resulting requirements into the long-range training plan.
  • You will report/monitor training readiness via DRRS-N and NWTP/NWTS certification.
  • You will represent JOINT TYPHOON WARNING CENTER (JTWC) training interests to ISIC and higher echelons.
  • You will acquire and maintain proficiency as a fully qualified Typhoon Duty Officer, performing operational forecasting, to include standing and/or augmenting the watch.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • This position requires occasionally working 12-hour rotating shifts to augment the Typhoon Duty Officer position, which includes nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements.
  • This is a Mission Essential (ME) position. The incumbent may be required to report to work in the event of a natural disaster, inclement weather, crisis, unscheduled operational weather support or emergency requirements.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

  • Experience applying meteorological theory and concepts, with specialized knowledge of tropical meteorology and application to tropical cyclone forecasting.
  • Experience utilizing meteorological equipment, instrumentation, data types, and data formats.
  • Experience utilizing satellite remote sensing concepts, imagery interpretation, numerical weather prediction concepts and application to operational forecasting.
  • Experience with Navy organization and policy, training instructions regulations, and forms.
  • Experience planning and organizing work, managing resources, and leading department and command personnel to meet deadlines
  • Experience taking appropriate courses of action when interpreting regulations, refining techniques, practices or methods, and resolving complex training issues.

Desired Qualifications:

  • While not strictly required for baseline eligibility, a Master's Degree in Tropical Meteorology is highly desired. Candidates possessing this credential should ensure it is clearly documented in their resume and uploaded transcripts.

Education

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
A. Degree: meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included

  1. At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of:
    • Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics;*
    • Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale);
    • Three semester hours of physical meteorology; and
    • Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation.
  2. Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.*
  3. Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations.*
  4. At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science.
