Duties

Help
  • Provides specialized perioperative care to patients undergoing procedures ranging from highly complex, high acuity surgeries.
  • Performs duties encompassing preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases for patients of all ages, genders and cultural backgrounds. Serves as nurse on call on a routine basis.
  • Assesses patients’ physiological and psychosocial status to formulate a database (nursing care plan) to include developing goals based upon nursing diagnosis and desired patient outcomes.
  • Verifies completion of patient preoperative care (antibiotic therapy, insertion of invasive lines, integumentary preparation, laboratory results, and appropriate medico-legal documents).
  • Manages care of patients for a wide range of surgical procedures of an advanced nature and difficulty, where there is a high susceptibility to infection and bodily functions are mechanically assisted by life support equipment.
  • Performs duty as a circulator and scrub person during surgical procedures. Counts needles, sponges, and instruments. Labels, handles and assures proper disposition of surgical specimens.
  • Ensures quality assurance and risk management. Notes and responds to breaches of standards and procedures which compromises the patient and staff members.
  • Implements individualized nursing plans to include safety precautions such as patient positioning and padding pressure points, infection control precautions, aseptic practices, personnel assignments, medications, supplies and equipment.
  • Serves as preceptor and instructor for newly assigned nurses, Military Proficiency Trainees (MPT's), military and civilian surgical technologists, Labor and Delivery nurses (L and D), Reservists, and Residents.
  • Teaches students, staff member's principles of scrubbing, gowning, gloving, surgical site preparation, and the use of multidisciplinary highly technical equipment.

  • Must maintain current licensure in a state and maintain Basic Cardiac Life Support.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing IAW AR600-85.
  • CHILD CARE BACKGROUND CHECK REQUIRED: National agency check with written inquiries (NACI) and state and criminal history repository (SCHR) checks will be required as a condition of employment.
  • Position is identified as inclement weather essential.
  • Pre-employment physical is required.
  • The work requires the employee to work evenings/nights; rotating shifts, extended hours, weekends, holidays or other schedules common to hospital operations.
  • Employee must be a licensed registered nurse.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • This position is covered by Health Affairs Policy 97006, 23 October 1996, which requires the employee to obtain Hepatitis B Immunization unless exempted by a physician.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Education/Experience: A diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's degree in Nursing from a professional nursing program and possession of at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level or above) which includes documented experience in providing education to patients, providing intraoperative nursing care to surgical patients, and administering medications.

OR

Education: A PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field including but not limited to Nursing Degree.

EXEMPTION: You are exempt from the qualification requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet one of the requirement below. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.

Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) from a professional nursing program

OR

3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education from a professional nursing program
