Help

The major duties of the Supervisory Recreation Fee Technician position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Collects appropriate fees at park entrance station, visitor center, campground and other visitor contact station following established accountability guidelines for handling government funds
  • Completes performance appraisals and counsels' employees; handles conduct and discipline issues; affects minor disciplinary measures and recommends other action(s) to higher level supervisor in more serious cases
  • Operates and troubleshoots all aspects of the nationwide RBMS point of sale system and/or recreation.gov
  • Provides current and accurate information to visitors concerning the NPS area and other surrounding areas of interest.
  • Hires, trains, and supervises employees, plans and schedules work. Encourage high performance of staff through a variety of motivational techniques and leads by example.

  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. You may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider:
    • your performance and conduct;
    • the needs and interests of the agency;

  • Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized. In the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period, such appointments are terminated. Upon completion of your probationary period your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.

  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-08 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: supervising or leading subordinate employees who either work in a fee collection setting or provide customer service, and/or disseminate resource information and orientation to the public or within an organization. Prepares schedules for the completion of work. Sets operational expectations, monitors, and evaluates subordinate employee performance and conduct . You must include hours per week worked.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

ICTAP/CTAP Statement: Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special prior­ity selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection. Well qualified means that the applicant meets the following: OPM qualification standards for the position; all selective placement factors, where applicable; special qualifying conditions that OPM has approved for the position, where applicable; is physically qualified with reasonable accommodation, where appropriate to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position upon entry; and is rated by the organization at least at the well qualified level on all competencies.

Additional information

Relocation Expenses Reimbursed: You may qualify for reimbursement of relocation expenses in accordance with agency policy, this is dependent on the park selection.

Physical Demands: This position may require standing for long periods of time, as well as walking, bending, lifting of moderately heavy items. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to the high volume of personal contacts and the responsibility of dealing with large amounts of money. If applicable, extreme physical exertion may be required while performing search and rescue, wildland firefighting, and other emergency response duties.

Working Conditions: This position typically works at an entrance station, campground office, fee office, remit office, visitor center, and/or visitor contact station. Work may be frequently performed in small, outdoor structures with open windows which results in exposure to extremes of temperature, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight. Park areas may be geographically located in areas of high elevation, rugged terrain, or dense populations. High levels of vehicle noise and emissions may exist during heavy visitation periods. Duties may be performed alone and/or in isolated locations.

Work Schedule is determined by the park; you may be asked to work mixed-tour full-time, part-time, weekends, holidays, or subject to a career-seasonal appointment. The position is subject to permanent hiring status career or career-conditional status, these are not temporary or seasonal positions. The work schedule is dependent upon the hiring park.

What is Career-Seasonal: Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately 6-9 months (or more depending on the park) and you will be in a non-pay status for approximately 3-6 months (or less depending on the park). Non pay status is dependent on the location of the position being hired. NOTE: Not all available positions are career-seasonal positions; both full-time (all year employment) and career-seasonal positions are available.

Bargaining Union Status Code or Union eligibility is dependent upon the location and grade.
