Operates a U.S. Government leased passenger-carrying gasoline or diesel vehicle throughout the National Capitol Region (NCR) for Department of Defense personnel.

Duties

Help

Incumbents typical work assignments may include the following:

  • Operate panel trucks, carryalls, handicap van and 15 - 36 passenger buses.
  • Drive a 15 to 36 passenger bus or similar vehicle with either manual (standard) or automatic transmission.
  • Support special events such as Ceremonial Bus Transportation Support for the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Chiefs of Staff and high-ranking officials with the Department of Defense.
  • Provide special transportation for the Medal of Honor ceremonies, that are usually conducted at the Pentagon or the White House which may require overtime.
  • Receive the Motor Equipment Utilization Record and verifies information such as authorization signature and correct vehicle registration number.
  • Operating a vehicle over predetermined routes and arrives/departs from pick-up points and discharge points at scheduled times.
  • Checking authorized passes on all passengers before allowing them to enter the van or bus.

  • The position may require you to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays and/ or overtime

  • Mission Essential designated position: employees may be required to report for, or remain at, work in dismissal or closure situations due to adverse weather conditions, natural disasters, or other emergency situations
  • The position requires a uniform to be worn
  • The incumbent is required to pass a pre-employment physical examination, as well as subsequent mandatory physical examinations every two years within 90 days of the expiration date
  • The incumbent must have the ability to obtain a US Government Vehicle Operators permit by passing the written and road test

Qualifications

Employment Physical (continued): The incumbent is required to pass a pre-employment physical examination, as well as subsequent mandatory physical examinations every two years within 90 days of the expiration date, scheduled through the Pentagon Motor Pool with the employer's preferred clinic. The employee will be permitted to use their own physicians if the employer is unable to schedule the appointment within 90 days of expiration.

Your background must demonstrate a full range of your ability to perform the duties of a Motor Vehicle Operator, WG-5703-07, without more than normal supervision.


EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position is Ability to perform the duties of a Motor Vehicle Operator without more than normal supervision.

JOB ELEMENTS: Those who meet the minimum level of experience and training for the screen-out element will then be evaluated in each of the following job elements:

  • Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles)
  • Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation)
  • Operation of Motor Vehicles

PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: Light to moderate physical effort is required in operating, turning, backing, and controlling vehicles which carry heavier loads due to the number of passengers. Moderate physical effort may be required in the handling of objects weighing up to 20 pounds and occasional handling of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Operates vehicles day or night in all types of traffic and weather conditions for all shifts. Operator is subject to cuts, bruises, and other injuries as a result of accident while driving vehicles. Must agree to work any of two shifts with proper notification. If required, must agree to wear government provided uniform while operating vehicles. If required to work overtime, must agree to do so and will be compensated at the authorized overtime rate.

ACTIVE DUTY SERVICE MEMBERS: Federal agencies treat active duty service member as veterans, disabled veterans, and preference eligible, when they submit, as part of their application package, a "certification" of active service in lieu of a DD-214, indicating the service member is otherwise eligible and will be discharged or released within 120 days from the date of submission.. A "certification" letter should be on letterhead of the appropriate military branch of the service and contain (1) the military service dates including the expected discharge or release date; and (2) the character of service. This "certification" must include your rank, dates of active duty service, type of discharge and character of service (i.e. honorable), and date any terminal leave will begin. It must be signed by, or by direction of, the adjutant, personnel officer, or commander of your unit or higher headquarters. Active duty members that fail to provide a valid "certification" of service with their initial application will be found "not eligible". Members may be appointed before the effective date of their military retirement/separation if they are on terminal leave.

DOD PPP candidates using Application-Based Procedures:

Military Spouse Preference (MSP) Eligible: Military Spouse Preference applicants, must be selected and placed at the highest grade level for which they have applied and been determined best qualified.
