College Graduate Hiring Authority applicants who have obtained a bachelors degree, within the past two years. Veteran applicants, who, due to military service obligations, were precluded from applying during the two-year eligibility period described above have a full two-year period of eligibility upon their release or discharge from active duty. The selectee will serve as a Computer Scientist in the Office of Investigations, Criminal Investigative Division. Typical work assignments include:

  • Participating in concept definition, planning, development, deployment, and assessment of computer networks and migration systems related to real-time computing and display.
  • Participating on teams to perform research and develop recommendations and documentation of results.
  • Assisting with the development and maintenance of Information Technology and Database systems.
  • Assisting higher graded Computer Scientist in developing digital computing systems to support activities such as database administration, record keeping, information management and resource allocation.

As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which we will evaluate your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, we may consider:
  • your performance and conduct;

  • whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and

Qualifications

To be considered under the College Graduate Hiring Authority applicants must meet below eligibility:

  • Have obtained a qualifying bachelors or graduate degree from a qualifying educational institution, within two years of submitting an application for appointment. The two-year eligibility period begins on the date the degree is received, not the date of the graduation ceremony.; OR
  • As a veteran (as defined in 5 USC 2108), who, due to military service obligations, were precluded from applying to the Program during the two-year eligibility period described above. These individuals have a full two-year period of eligibility upon their release or discharge from active duty. In no event, however, may this eligibility period extend beyond six years from the date on which the individual completed their academic requirements.
In addition to meeting the above eligibility you must also meet the following minimum qualification for the respective grade level in which you are applying:

Applicants must demonstrate that they meet the Basic Requirements AND Minimum Qualification requirements as listed below

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions

Evaluation of Education:

Applicants should have sufficient knowledge to understand the fundamental concepts and techniques of computer science. Courses designed to provide an introduction to computer science techniques and methodologies, to problems of system design, and to other specialized fields are acceptable. Courses or experience in teaching elementary, business, or shop mathematics are not acceptable

AND

You qualify for the GS-7 level (starting salary $58,193.00) if you possess one of the following:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level performing duties such as:
  • Applying computer science theories and techniques to develop scripts.
  • Assisting in recordkeeping, information management and database administration.
  • Maintaining software file management procedure and access programs.
OR
  • A bachelor's degree (as defined in the basic requirement) with superior academic achievement, which is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership. OR
  • One full year of graduate level education (as defined in the basic requirement) at an accredited or pre-accredited college or university.
OR
  • A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position if the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
