As a INTELLIGENCE RESEARCH SPECIALIST, your typical work assignments may include: The incumbent is a newly hired Intelligence Research Specialist who assists Senior Intelligence Research Specialists and Special Agents by performing preliminary research, analysis, and evaluation of raw intelligence data for segments of large projects and studies.
As an Intelligence Research Specialist, work assignments may include, but not limited to:
Assists in projecting and revising long-range estimates in their assigned field and may be required to participate on high-level committees of DEA to evaluate, discuss, test, and validate intelligence research reports and intelligence collection programs, plans, guides, and manuals before they are finalized for approval and release.
Provides oral briefings and/or recommendations on developed information, interrelationships, and intelligence gaps.
Participates in evaluating incoming intelligence reports and information, prepares assigned portions of finished intelligence reports, and supplies pertinent intelligence information to enforcement groups for on-going investigations
Assesses unforeseen developments, new phenomena and difficulties encountered, and may recommend changes in direction and approach.
Analyzes drug law enforcement intelligence reports and data to recommend decisions to the Agency, other law enforcement agencies, and the intelligence community.
Collects, reviews, interprets, evaluates, and integrates large volumes of intelligence data from multiple sources
pertaining to extensive, interrelated geographical or functional fields
Participates in maintaining the oversight of intelligence planning that supports Counter Drug operations and
provides operational and intelligence consultation and advice to DEA Special Agents/Task Force Officers as dictated by
operational requirements

Newly hired Intelligence Research Specialists must successfully complete the 11 week Basic Intelligence Research Specialist (BIRS) Training Course at the DEA Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
Qualifications

Applicants applying for the GS-11 and GS-12 must meet one of the following requirements:
GS-11: Must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 Federal grade level performing the following duties: monitoring of projects, performing research, conducting special studies, analyzing and evaluating intelligence data, discussing, testing, validating intelligence research reports, and may be required to provide guidance/directions to lower-graded specialists. Collects, processes, analyses, produces, and disseminates criminal investigative-derived Intelligence products
OR a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree OR LL.M., if related; OR a combination of both, experience and education.
GS-12: Must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 Federal grade level performing the following duties: monitors projects, performs research, conducts special studies, analyzes and evaluates intelligence data, discusses, tests, validates intelligence research reports, and provides guidance/directions to lower-graded specialists. Assesses the validity, accuracy, reliability, relevance, and urgency of all information related to their assignment area. Collects, processes, analyses, produces, and disseminates criminal investigative-derived Intelligence products. Analyzes highly specialized, particularly sensitive intelligence information pertaining to drug law enforcement.

Training Requirement: As a term of employment, individuals selected for this position are required to successfully complete the Basic Intelligence Research Specialist Training Program. This is a 11-week training held at the DEA Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
Mobility Requirement: This position is subject to reassignment to any domestic DEA facility, depending on the needs of the DEA. Individuals selected for this position are required to sign a mobility agreement as a condition of employment.
