Duties

Help

This position is located at Combined Surface Maintenance Shop (CSMS) in Phoenix, Arizona. The purpose of the position is to serve as an inspector of surface maintenance vehicles and equipment to ensure that physical and operating characteristics are within acceptable standards and specifications. Duties involve complex inspection work, requiring a wide variety of inspection processes and techniques, at remote worksites or field installations where a supervisor is not readily available. In these situations, work is performed very independently and decisions require a wide range of subjective judgments.

  • ARIZONA ARMY NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED. Prior to appointment into this position, selectee must be a current member of the Arizona Army National Guard, in a military organization supported by the CSMS.
  • This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard, required prior to the effective date of placement.
  • Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.
  • Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.
  • Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership and employment in the National Guard in the military grade listed in this announcement.
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.
  • May be required to successfully complete a trial period.
  • Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
  • Incumbent must possess and maintain a current state driver’s license.
  • Irregular and/or overtime (compensatory) hours may be required to support operational requirements or contingencies or may be required to work hours outside of the normal duty day.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain required GCSS (Global Combat Support System) -Army certification within 15 days of hire date. Must be able to maintain access to GCSS-Army.

Qualifications

Military Grades:
Enlisted: PFC/E-3 to MSG/E-8
Warrant Officer: WO1/W-1

Compatible Military Assignments:
Enlisted: 88M, 91, 92, or 94 Series
Warrant Officer: 88M, 91, 92, or 94 Series

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:

WG-11: Must possess at least 24 months experience or training leading to an extensive knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of complex interconnecting systems, assemblies, and parts for a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles, and equipment. Ability to diagnose, repair, overhaul, and modify interconnected complex systems on a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles, and equipment. Extensive knowledge of state of the art electrical, electronic, complex hydraulic, pneumatic, and other major non-mechanical systems that have a functional relationship and effect on the operation of major mechanical systems. Extensive knowledge of hydraulic lifting, loading, turning, and positioning systems and their mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic controls. Skill and knowledge to develop or improvise methods, alter parts, and make repairs in the absence of technical guidelines (such as modifying parts to fit and mesh into systems for which the parts were not designed); improvise modifications to equipment to correct recurring malfunctions; and design modifications to meet special test requirements or other special needs.

WG-12: Must possess at least 36 months experience or training leading to an extensive knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of complex interconnecting systems, assemblies, and parts for a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles, and equipment. Ability to diagnose, repair, overhaul, and modify interconnected complex systems on a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles, and equipment. Extensive knowledge of state of the art electrical, electronic, complex hydraulic, pneumatic, and other major non-mechanical systems that have a functional relationship and effect on the operation of major mechanical systems. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the following competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics):

1. Ability to apply a wide variety of complex inspection techniques to examine a variety of heavy-duty mobile equipment (i.e., combat, tactical, etc.) and automotive vehicles (i.e., attack tanks, large cranes, tank retrievers, fire trucks, bridge transporters, armored vehicle launched bridges, bulldozers, road graders, crawler tractors, power shovels, self-propelled earth compacting equipment, self-propelled artillery, etc.).

2. Comprehensive knowledge of GCSS-Army, and ability to input equipment and work order data, provide status of equipment, monitor job order status, and monitor work priorities.

3. Ability to utilize, interpret and apply parts list, manufacturer's repair manuals, technical manuals, diagrams, engineering drawings, diagnostic computer information, schematics and Maintenance Expenditure Limits (MEL) to evaluate economic feasibility of repairs for any equipment in the Arizona Army National Guard inventory.

4. Knowledge in all of the types of inspections addressed in DA PAMs, ATPs, and ARs by name, when to use them, and what the outcomes of the inspections are used for.

5. Ability to remain well-informed on the specifics of workload; in order to provide current and relevant information to the supervisor on status and progress of work, causes of delays, and overall work operations and problems.

6. Ability to inspect complex, interrelated mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electronic and electrical systems, equipment and their components while in operation or in a standby condition.

7. Knowledge in operating a wide variety of heavy-duty mobile equipment (i.e., combat, tactical, etc.) and automotive vehicles (i.e., attack tanks, large cranes, tank retrievers, fire trucks, bridge transporters, armored vehicle launched bridges, bulldozers, road graders, crawler tractors, power shovels, self-propelled earth compacting equipment, self-propelled artillery, etc.)

8. Ability to prioritize workload, manage multiple maintenance and inspection work orders, research diagnostic and repair procedures, and research repair parts.

9. Ability to use specially designed testing methods and test equipment such as computerized test sets, precision gauges, electronic sensors, injector test stands, engine scopes, etc., to assure that tolerance and safety factors have been met.

10. Ability to communicate effectively with outside agencies, supervisors, and lower grade mechanics, both verbally and in writing, to include skills in using computers and office productivity software to organize and convey information or give instruction relevant to maintenance operations.
