Other Duties/ Responsibilities

  • Cleans, performs minor maintenance, and checks shuttle bus or van for safety related issues.
  • Operates multi-passenger vehicles on a scheduled, designated route, ensuring the safe and timely transportation of passengers.
  • Conducts thorough pre- and post–shift vehicle inspections to ensure all safety equipment and mechanical components are in proper working order.
  • Assists passengers with boarding and exiting, including operating wheelchair lifts and restraints.
  • Provides friendly and helpful customer service, including greeting passengers, answering questions about the route, and providing information about the Senate campus.
  • Communicates effectively with two-way radios or cell phones to report delays, incidents, or mechanical issues.
  • Assists in COOP (Continuity of Operations Plan) trainings and emergencies.

Required Work Experience

  • At least one year of driving experience operating a shuttle bus or similar vehicle.

Required Special Skills/ Knowledge

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license for at least five years and a good driving record.
  • Ability to operate a shuttle bus in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance, repair, and safety.
  • Ability to perform physical labor involved in minor vehicle maintenance and to operate cleaning and tire changing equipment.
  • Ability to deal effectively and courteously with Senate staff when addressing concerns related to the shuttle service.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.

As part of our hiring process, we may conduct a skills assessment to better understand an applicant’s proficiency in key areas relevant to the role. 

Desired Qualifications

  • Possession of a CDL Class B experience is encouraged but not required.
  • Experience with pre-trip inspections, basic vehicle maintenance checks, and fueling procedures.

Working Conditions

  • Since this position requires onsite presence in support of the U.S. Senate when in session, this position requires the employee to be available and prepared to work during government shutdowns, in inclement weather, on holidays, and during late night, overnight, and weekend sessions. In the context of government furloughs, this position is considered excepted.
  • Sedentary.
  • Ability to lift large machinery.

Education

High School Diploma or GED.
