This position is part of the Office of Enterprise Assessments, Office of Enforcement, Department of Energy. As a Health Physicist, you will conduct investigations of possible violations of the Department's nuclear safety regulations, review of all aspects of the radiation protection program for the organization's missions and tasks, and lead teams of DOE and contractor technical experts in the conduct of, investigations, inspections, reviews, and associated technical analyses.
Summary
This position is part of the Office of Enterprise Assessments, Office of Enforcement, Department of Energy. As a Health Physicist, you will conduct investigations of possible violations of the Department's nuclear safety regulations, review of all aspects of the radiation protection program for the organization's missions and tasks, and lead teams of DOE and contractor technical experts in the conduct of, investigations, inspections, reviews, and associated technical analyses.
This position is open to all current Department of Energy (including employees of BPA, WAPA, SEPA, SWPA, NNSA) employees on a career or career-conditional competitive service appointment. DOE employees participating in either the OPM or DOE Deferred Resignation Program (DRP) are not eligible to apply for this announcement. DRP participants are not considered active DOE employees because they have agreed to separate from the agency.
Serve as team leader for investigations and evaluations of non-compliances with the Department's nuclear safety regulations at DOE nuclear and non-nuclear facilities complex-wide, with a specific focus on radiation protection.
Lead, direct, and participate in multidisciplinary teams and effectively integrate inputs from the team and stakeholders to ensure systematic, thorough, and professional performance of investigations and that enforcement conclusions are sound and factually based.
Serve as the senior technical expert in the area of radiation protection to the Director of Nuclear Safety Enforcement.
Evaluate highly technical and unique nuclear safety issues at DOE facilities to determine contractor compliance with DOE's nuclear safety rules, with a specific emphasis on radiological protection.
Prepare detailed reports and recommendations for enforcement action to federal and contractor management in both written and oral formats.

Qualifications
BASIC REQUIREMENT:
1. Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.

2. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in above, plus appropriate experience or other education.
or
3. Certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in the paragraph one.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-14 in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting ALL of the following:
Conducting audits or assessments to ensure ongoing compliance with nuclear safety programs.
Analyzing nuclear safety issues to identify underlying trends, causes, and potential mitigations.
There is no substitution of education for experience at the GS-15 level.
