Duties

Help

As a Land Management Law Enforcement Officer your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Serves as a commissioned law enforcement officer performing patrol duties. These duties include, but are not limited to; detecting, and investigating crime; apprehending, detaining, arresting and/or issuing citations/warnings; educating the public; and prosecuting violators for a variety of laws enacted for the protection of life, property, and resources.
  • Administrative duties other than LE reports include, but are not limited to; monthly regional summaries, evidence, timekeeping, property and fleet management, budget & purchasing, training records, and LE plans.
  • As appropriate develops and/or manages regional LE online records and electronic files, such as Evidence.com, SharePoint and Teams sites, Excel sheets or other regional systems with the intent to improve program efficiency.
  • Assist the Chief in the planning and execution of the Service's mandatory annual in-service training as well as other training and qualifications including, advanced training and instructor management. Continuously evaluates effectiveness of training program and makes recommendations on future needs.
  • Assist the Chief and Patrol Captains with overall management of LE program, including, but not limited to; law enforcement planning & strategy, staffing, budget, compliance and inspections, policy review/implementation, fleet, inter/intra agency coordination, MOU's and special projects as they develop.

Qualifications

Only experience and education obtained by 05/26/2025 will be considered.

In order to qualify for this position you must possess both the Minimum Qualification.

Minimum Qualification [GS-12]

  1. One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level. Specialized experience demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform successfully the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience include: work performed investigating violations of laws and regulations on federal lands, including laws pertaining to poaching, illegal hunting, or similar wildlife-related activities; preparing investigative case files according to standard operating procedures to ensure they meet legal requirements; reviewing law enforcement regulations, policies or procedures to recommend improvements or clarifications; delivering presentations or informal talks to the public about the laws, regulations and policies in land management; and administering the training and budgetary program.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Time In Grade Requirement: Applicants must meet both eligibility and qualification requirements for the position of interest by the closing date of the JOA. Specifically,

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

DRIVER'S LICENSE: Must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license in order to operates motor vehicles, or special purpose law enforcement vehicles of various types including four-wheel drives, all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles, and small watercraft.
Require to obtain and wear an official U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform.
Require to submit an OF-178, Certificate of Medical Examination, if the form is not already on file.
Require to accept, maintain, and exercise law enforcement authority.
Must be certified in providing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid or emergency medical services (EMS).Must qualify with and maintain (annual/semiannual) firearms qualification and must safely utilize firearms, nonlethal weapons, and defensive tactics in the conduct of daily activities.
This position sensitivity level has been designated as non-critical sensitive. The selectee must maintain favorable background investigation.
Lautenberg Amendment: This position authorized the incumbent to carry a firearm. Any person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition (Title 18, U.S.C. Section 922(g)(9). Candidates under consideration will be required to certify whether they have ever been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
37th BIRTHDAY: The maximum entry-age for this position shall not exceed age 37, unless you have sufficient prior Federal civilian law enforcement (or firefighter, if applicable) experience, or you are a preference eligible veteran.
Law Enforcement Retirement: The incumbent of this position performs primary law enforcement work and is eligible for coverage under the law enforcement retirement provisions of Title 5. U.S.C. Part 841 or 842.Must successfully complete Land Management Police Training Program (FLTEC) or equivalent, Federal Wildlife Officer Basic Training (FWOBT), and Field Training and Evaluation Program (FWS-FTEP).
