Summary

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: Serves as a senior hydrologic technician responsible for the management and maintenance of the district's Hydraulics and Hydrology Branch's field data collection program and equipment.

Duties

Help
  • Plans, prepares, and leads field related activities on large lake and river systems.
  • Uses hi-tech instrumentation to measure discharge and other physical properties on large lake and river systems including acoustic doppler current profilers (ADCP).
  • Manages upkeep and maintenance of field equipment including survey vessels, work trucks, and scientific instrumentation.
  • Maintains workshop organization and maintenance.
  • Performs repair and maintenance assignments at various gauging stations.
  • Determines solutions to problems and if necessary, deviates from schedules to check and repair higher priority gauges.
  • Designs and fabricates mounting systems for instrumentation as necessary to complete field missions.
  • Collects, compiles, and disseminates hydraulic, hydrologic, and physical data for the Great Lakes basin.
  • Posts appropriate data streams to the web pages for public dissemination.
  • Assembles necessary field equipment and supplies.
  • Prepares instructive material, oversees upkeep of equipment, and ensures the proper adherence to safety practices.
  • Performs various miscellaneous administrative duties including basic financial management support.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes monitoring of flows, currents, and water levels, the collection of sediment samples using a variety of methods including grab sampling and coring, performing water quality and turbidity monitoring, conducting topographic and bathymetric surveying, collecting wave data, and performing lake and riverbed characterization. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this position at the GS-12 level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
