  • Functions as an independent practitioner. Acts as an available consultant to other health professionals in matters of mental health and psychiatry in both inpatient and outpatient areas evaluating patients in a timely and courteous manner; May at times be the sole psychiatric practitioner at the service unit.
  • Evaluates the behavioral health/medical aspects of treatment plans periodically, recognizing the need for reassessment by other health professionals. Provides diagnostic, preventative, and therapeutic mental health (MH) services to patients and their family members.
  • Coordinates services with members of the Counseling, Integrated Behavioral Health, and Primary Care departments. Makes referrals to other departments or specialists as appropriate. Referrals may include traditional/spiritual modalities. Collaborates with community partners on internal and external projects to promote community mental health.
  • Participates with management in planning, instituting, evaluating, and revising program plans; assists in determining conditions, resources, and policies essential to delivery of health services.
  • Tracks and reports data on assigned patient population of psychiatric patients with respect to depression, suicidality, and substance abuse.

This is a designated position covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Due to this requirement, the agency must ensure that persons hired for these positions have not been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere or guilty to certain crimes.

This position is subject to shifts: days, evenings, nights, weekends, and/or holidays to provide continuity of patient care services as needed.

Position requires licensure, registration, and certificate requirement to prescribe controlled substance medication to include psychotropic drugs as mandated by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate by the US Department of Justice.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Education for Advanced Practice Nurse Positions: For Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) positions, applicants must possess a graduate or higher level degree in nursing from an accredited educational program in the area of expertise or specialty indicated by the position. Areas of specialties for positions include, but are not limited to, Acute Care, Anesthesia, Community Health, Family, Geriatric, Home Health, Midwifery, Neonatal, Oncology, Pediatric, Psychiatric, Allergy and Immunology, Women's Health, Cardiovascular, Dermatology, Occupational Health, Orthopedic, Respiratory, or other specialties identified for the position.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Additional License Requirements for Advanced Practice Nurse Positions: Applicants for Advanced Practice Nurse positions must be licensed or registered by a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States in the clinical specialty required by the position.

GS-13: In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

Therapeutic services to all age groups that includes assessment, diagnosis and treatment of various illnesses, formulate and implement treatment plans, prescribe medications, order and interpret diagnostic tests, educate and counsel patients, and collaborate with physicians concerning patient care.

Additional information

Per IHS policy (SGM 21-04) IHS selectees to positions located in Federally operated hospitals, health centers, and clinics must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before entry on duty or have IHS approve a medical or religious exemption. If an exemption is approved then wearing a face mask and regular testing for COVID-19 will be required. Your Human Resources Specialist will provide a list of documents acceptable as vaccination proof and instructions on how to submit your vaccination documentation or how to request a medical or religious exemption, if needed.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.

Routine duties shall include providing medical care and public health services to individuals eligible for services provided by the Indian Health Service in homes, schools, clinics, job sites, and other community locations within the assigned Service Unit as applicable.
