Duties

Selectee(s) will report to an assigned DOL office location on a regular basis and be eligible for telework as determined by agency policy. This is not a remote position. Offices are located in: Washington, DC; Dallas, TX; Boston, MA; Philadelphia, PA; San Francisco, CA. For specific locations, see: DOL offices. Advertised salary reflects the pay range for the above locations. Upon selection, salary will be set in accordance with the selectee's assigned duty location.

Major duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

NETWORK

  • Assist senior staff in designing and implementing basic network systems to support secure and efficient operations.
  • Learn to optimize network performance by integrating technologies and improving existing infrastructure under supervision.
  • Troubleshoot routine network issues under close guidance, focusing on minimizing downtime and maintaining system performance.
  • Participate in network projects by performing assigned planning and implementation tasks.
  • Assist in the development and application of network security policies and procedures under supervision.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to support team efforts and ensure effective network operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
INFORMATION SECURITY
  • Participate in developing and implementing cybersecurity measures to protect systems and sensitive data, gaining hands-on experience with circuits, operational environments to include data centers, or communication platforms.
  • Assist in the design, deployment, and maintenance of security infrastructure, such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, or encryption protocols, through team projects and assignments.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of security policies and incident response plans relevant to branch functions by actively participating in team discussions and planning sessions.
  • Monitor system activity under supervision, analyze security logs to detect anomalies, and respond to incidents as part of the team.
  • Design and deliver cybersecurity training sessions to branch staff, enhancing knowledge through direct involvement and professional development opportunities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-09 in the Federal Service.

Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.

Qualifying specialized experience for GS-11 includes:

  • Experience assisting with the implementation and maintenance of basic network systems and configurations, including monitoring performance and resolving common issues under supervision.
  • Knowledge of fundamental cybersecurity principles, including basic risk assessment, routine vulnerability scans, and adherence to established security protocols within a federal or corporate IT environment.
  • Ability to provide technical support for network-related projects, including assisting in troubleshooting, documenting technical procedures, and collaborating with team members to meet project objectives.
Additional to the above specialized experience, for all positions individuals must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below.

2.Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
3. Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
4.Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

OR

EDUCATION: Ph.D or equivalent Doctoral degree OR 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a Ph.D. or equivalent Doctoral degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.

This position is inside the bargaining unit. If the duty location is within the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, the position will be included in the Local 12, AFGE bargaining unit. If the duty location is outside the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, the position will be included in the NCFLL bargaining unit.
