Help

As a full performance Biologist (Biophysics), you will:

  • Serve as a Program Manager determining strategic scientific direction of a bioimaging/biophysics research program and all the administrative activities that support the portfolio.
  • Manage the research program by soliciting, reviewing, and recommending proposal selections and denials and promoting interagency collaborations.
  • Propose and make changes to the research portfolio during budget approval for funding allocations.
  • Advise on the planning and evaluation of research programs in the bioimaging/ biophysics field globally.
  • Lead committees of all stakeholders representing Department of Energy and other programmatic interests in consulting and negotiating globally on sensitive issues.

  • Some hiring incentives may be authorized for a highly qualified candidate based on budget availability and in accordance with federal regulations. Permanent Change of Station (PCS) is not authorized.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT:

  1. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

    OR

  2. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

(Must submit transcripts).

In addition to meeting the education requirement above, candidates must possess the specialized experience below.


SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

For GS-14:
A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-13 in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting 2 of 3 of the following:

1. Supporting management on basic research in plant biology, microbial biology, biophysics, or bioimaging globally.
2. Coordinating research programs in plant biology, microbial biology, bioimaging, and biophysics.
3. Supporting groups in basic scientific research activities involving laboratories, universities, or private institutions.


For GS-15: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-14 in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as meeting ALL of the following:

1. Managing basic research in plant biology, microbial biology, biophysics or bioimaging science globally.
2. Planning research programs in plant biology, microbial biology, biophysics or bioimaging science.
3. Guiding groups in basic scientific research activities involving laboratories, universities, or private institutions.

"Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This position is announced under a government-wide Direct-Hire Authority (DHA) for Biologist (Biophysics) positions in the 0401 series. Under the DHA, applicants who meet the Education and Qualification requirements listed in this announcement will be referred for consideration. Veteran's Preference, category rating, and traditional rating and ranking of applicants do not apply under the DHA process.
