Duties

  • Must be able to perform work without more than normal supervision.
  • Receives assignments through Information Work Management System, supervisors or work leaders; responds to building emergencies; develops work plans and layouts from verbal requests and sketches to meet a variety of unique and critical requirements.
  • Installs, modifies, repairs, maintains, troubleshoots, tests and operate electrical and electronic lines, circuits, systems and associated fixtures, controls, equipment, standby UPS systems, medium voltage switching stations and generators.
  • Work requires nonstandard applications that lack clear precedent and require extensive modifications to fabricate, install, troubleshoot and modify electrical and electronic controls, monitoring systems and equipment to meet unique conditions.
  • Responsible for the power distribution lines and circuits that supply a wide range of voltage, amperage, phase and frequency requirements to a variety of equipment.
  • Works from building plans, wiring diagrams, drawings and electrical maintenance and repair manuals; plans and lays out routing, placement, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity and safe operation of lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls.
  • Performs complete electrical wiring or rewiring projects for building segments and structures. Connects completed electrical circuits to power source and works on energized equipment.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
To qualify for this WG-11 ELECTRICIAN position your resume must demonstrate:
(1) the Screen Out AND
(2) the six individual Job Elements

(1) SCREEN OUT: ABILITY TO DO ELECTRICAL WORK WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION

REQUIREMENT: Electricians in this position work without more than normal supervision and perform a variety of electrical assignments and projects required to operate and maintain electrical systems across various large multi-floor facilities.

You must demonstrate fundamental knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to perform the work of the- electrical trade.

At a minimum, your work must not require more than regular spot checks or guidance during progress and upon completion.

(2) JOB ELEMENTS: Describe duties you perform that show you have (at a minimum):

-- fundamental knowledge of electrical equipment

- ability to apply electrical theory and use electrical instruments

-- fundamental knowledge of the technical practices of the electrical trade

- ability to read and interpret standard electrical drawings

-- regular hands-on use of standard electrical tools

-- ability to perform visual, audible or mechanical checks of electrical systems

CONDITIONS OF POSITION:
Due to the nature of work in this position, the following conditions are essential for successful performance and you must fully comply with these conditions to meet performance requirements.

Successful performance of work in this position and adherence to these conditions will be assessed during the 1-year probationary period that may be served by new appointees (e.g., new to SSA and/or new to this series).

(1) This is an emergency / mission-critical position. You may be called to work after-hours, on weekends and holidays.

(2) You may be required to report to or remain at a duty station to perform critical services when employees are generally excused for all or part of a workday in emergency conditions.

(3) You may be required to report during irregular hours and travel in hazardous weather conditions.

(4) Electricians in this position are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year around.

(5) Work is performed on ladders, scaffolds and platforms. Work requires frequent standing, stooping, bending, climbing, crouching, kneeling, arm movement and working in tiring uncomfortable positions and confined spaces.

(6) Heavy exertion and physical strength is required at frequent intervals to handle heavy and bulky materials. May need to lift, carry and move equipment, tools and materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, and occasionally lift or move heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers.

(7) Work is usually performed indoors where light, heat and ventilation are adequate. However, some work is conducted outside in all types of weather.

(8) Work may be performed under hot or cold conditions, on agency buildings requiring significant electrical and electronic modifications to both equipment and facilities. May be exposed to weather conditions and the hazards of working on and around scaffolds, ladders and confined spaces.

(9) Electricians are subject to injury, such as electric shock, cuts, bruises, falls and burns. May be exposed to high noise levels. May be required to work in areas that are dusty, dirty and confined where ventilation, heating and cooling equipment has been shut off.

(10) You will be required to report to SSA-HQ in Woodlawn, Maryland; relocation expenses will not be paid.

(11) You may be required to support other agency buildings to provide critical services to sustain the operational needs of agency buildings.

(12) You may be required to wear a uniform while working at the duty station.

(13) Telework and Alternate Work Schedules are not authorized for this position; position is not authorized to be filled by outstationing.
