Duties

Help
  • Oversees the scope of practice and provision of nursing services within an ambulatory clinic.
  • The incumbent provides the full range of supervisory duties to include personnel and resource management comprised of coordinating staffing support, scheduling, hiring, and enforcement of performance standards.
  • The incumbent advises the senior leadership on nursing matters; reviews, recommends, and implements changes; and collaborates with leadership in the development of regulations, procedures, new methods, and other matters.
  • Participates in Department of Nursing meetings/activities to enhance the quality of management practices, policy definition, procedures, and programs.
  • Fully evaluates patient histories to determine if there will be any concerns or potential reactions to processes or substances administered at the clinic.
  • Incumbent has overall responsibility for the day-to-day management of assigned nursing personnel within the health clinic.
  • This position listens and resolves complaints from patients and staff that may result in rewards and/or disciplinary measures for assigned employees.

  • Must obtain within 30 days of employment and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical examination; ability to lift over 50lbs.
  • This position is covered by Health Affairs Policy 97006, 23 Oct. 96, which requires the incumbent to obtain Hepatitis B Immunization unless exempted by a physician as well as an immunization screening as a condition of employment.
  • This position requires a childcare background investigation.
  • This position is covered by the Civilian Drug Abuse Testing Program.
  • This is an inclement weather position. The incumbent is expected to make every attempt to report for duty on time and/or remain on duty during inclement weather conditions.
  • This position is subject to irregular tours of duty and may require work on weekends, call duties, and evenings.
  • Applicants must be able to fulfill non-privileged professional credential requirements
  • This position requires occasional travel - 5% Temporary Duty (TDY)
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • THIS POSITION IS COVERED BY THE CIVILIAN DRUG ABUSE TESTING PROGRAM.
  • This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Basic Requirement for Supervisory Nurse (Amin/Ambulatory):

Degree: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.).

Licensure: A current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States; and you must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination.

Foreign Degree: A degree from a Foreign Nursing School. Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0610 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Applicants claiming this exemption must meet the requirement below. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.

Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

Active, current registration as a professional nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Professional Nursing Experience: One-year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service which includes documented experience which demonstrates experience in: 1) providing nursing care to patients in an outpatient setting to Obstetrics/Gynecology patients; 2) resolving clinical and administrative issues within the clinic; 3) overseeing nursing personnel within a medical setting. This definition of professional nursing experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
