Help

FIELDWORK - Perform archeological field work necessary to assess potential impacts to cultural resources resulting from proposed undertakings. Conduct excavation and testing of archeological sites, including the careful recovery of sample materials.
LEADERSHIP - Ensures standard protection measures are established prior to ground-disturbing project activities including cultural resource management training, identification of avoidance areas, identification of protection measures and on-site monitoring support.
DATA MANAGEMENT - Maintain and enter high-quality data including archeological and cultural resource information into various databases, forms, and integrate a variety of software applications in resource documentation.
COMPLIANCE - Provide professional and technical assistance including National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 compliance, project review and planning, archeological resource documentation, National Register evaluations, and field condition assessments.

Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work are sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.

Work Environment: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, caves, firelines, cold and icy environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed-winged aircraft and helicopters is possible.

Area Information: Yosemite is among the most popular and iconic national parks; the grandeur of the 1,100 square mile park is matched by the complexity of the work environment and the caliber of the staff who rise to meet it. As with other remote mountain areas, there are challenges of living and working in this remote location.

The Yosemite Cultural Resource program manages archeology, anthropology, the American Indian liaison program, historic architecture and historic landscapes. Our office has 10-15 year-round staff with approximately 5-10 seasonal staff in the summer.

  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home on an occasional basis. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

Education
A.
1. Degree
that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas:

  • History of archeology.
  • Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa.
  • Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development.
  • Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques.
  • Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work.

    AND

  • Six semester hours of related course work in:

    AND

    • geography, geology, or cultural geography;
    • history, historiography, or historical archeology;
    • environmental studies;
    • scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or
    • surveying;
AND

Archeological field school
  • 2. Related Curriculum: degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A.1 (including archeological field school).

    OR

    B. Combination of Education and Experience
    College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.

    OR

    C. Experience
    Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-0193-09: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as the majority of the following: one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes the following: 1) With supervisory support, develop and complete archeological research, including problem definition and work planning, implementation of data collection, written summary of methods and results, and final publication of work; 2) Contribution to interdisciplinary environmental planning and resources management teams, providing information on archeological resources and contributing to, or reviewing, planning, inventory, assessment, and compliance documents; 3) Design, implement, and supervise archeological projects involving documentary, archival, and collections research; field investigations (both survey and excavation); laboratory analysis of recovered data; and professional report writing.
OR
Have a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related; NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education.
OR
Successfully completed an appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). To combine education and experience, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of completed graduate education beyond the first year by 18 (or 27 for quarter hours). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts as proof of any claimed education.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
