Duties

Help

As an Emergency Management Specialist, you will:

  • Develop and administer the Division's emergency management programs and ensure supporting documentation is maintained and up to date.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, as well as Departmental policies and directives.
  • Coordinate disaster response or crisis management activities, providing recommendations and advice to senior level staff as required.
  • Evaluate the conformance of programs and program actions to available guides, such as pertinent laws, regulations, policies, and precedents that affect the use of program and related resources.
  • Participate in development and delivery of classes and briefings on emergency preparation, procedures, and processes.
  • Recognize hazardous or potentially hazardous conditions, develop measures to eliminate or control these conditions and effectively communicate the appropriate measures to resolve these problems.

Qualifications

To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, applicant must have one of the following:

  • One (1) year of specialized experience at, or equivalent to, the GS-9 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include: participation in working groups on emergency preparedness; preparation of policies and procedures related to emergency management; and providing training to organization personnel in emergency response policy and procedure; OR
  • PhD or equivalent doctoral degree or three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree; OR
  • A combination of specialized experience and education.
Combination of Education and Experience - Your current education completed is credited as a percentage of the education required for the grade level and your current experience is credited as a percentage of the total experience required for the grade level. The two percentages are added and must equal 100% in order to qualify for the desired grade level.

All academic degrees and coursework must be completed at a college or university that has obtained accreditation or pre-accreditation status from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools that meet this criteria, see www.ed.gov.

Foreign Education: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
