Duties

Help

As an Electronics Technician within the Earthquake Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Maintaining the existing network of analog/digital equipment and relay stations.
  • Installing, configuring, diagnosing, and repairing sophisticated electronic seismic station components.
  • Planning, designing, and fabricating electronic and mechanical systems as part of the installation of new seismic stations.
  • Working with scientists/engineers from USGS and other institutions on special studies and field response to significant earthquakes

Physical Demands: Long periods of standing and detailed electronics work are required. Field work requires moderately strenuous physical demands including stooping, reaching, lifting, and carrying heavy objects, climbing, digging, mixing cement, walking in uneven terrain, some mountaineering, and may occur in adverse conditions. Some work requires special training for particularly hazardous conditions including flying in special use aircraft, climbing towers, operation of lifts and cranes such as snooper cranes, operation of heavy machinery to include portable rigs, backhoes, and other equipment, and entering confined spaces. Long travel days in a vehicle, aircraft, or marine vessel are not uncommon.

Work Environment: Work is performed in an office setting, electronics lab, computer rooms, and in the field where it is common to work in dense urban environments but also harsh, desolate, and mountainous environments. Long drives on unpaved roads are often necessary to reach field sites. Travel by boat, helicopter, UTV, ATV or other non-conventional travel may be required. Some overnight travel is expected. This position will occasionally require working in potentially hazardous environments. These include electrical shock, falls from high towers, enclosed spaces, tight space in, on top of, and under buildings near base isolators, corrosive chemicals, extreme weather conditions, sling loading and other logistical loading of aircraft, etc. The incumbent will be trained in and expected to adhere to safety procedures and the proper use of safety equipment when in performance of these tasks.
