NOTE: This is a developmental position with a full promotion level of GS-09. As a Wage and Hour Technician at the grades GS-7 through the GS-08, you will receive on-the-job and other formal training related to the provisions of the laws enforced by the agency. You will work under close observation/direction of a subject matter expert or a supervisor. Your assignments are more limited in complexity and are performed under closer supervision and extensive review. You will perform the following duties (which is not an all-inclusive list) and as you progress, the assignments will become more difficult and complex in preparation for the next grade level until you reach the GS-09 grade level. As a Wage and Hour Technician, duties will consist of but is not limited to the following:

  • Assists senior staff as needed with various administrative and management duties.
  • Assists in the training of clerical staff and provides technical assistance with administrative duties as needed.
  • Provides technical assistance to the public, and employers/employees regarding Wage and Hour laws and regulations.
  • Assists Investigators, as needed, with investigation.
  • Uses a computer to input data, create documents and create and maintain files. Initiate appropriate notification and/or referral to other agencies.
  • Types letters, forms, e-mail communications and other applicable documents.

  • Receives incoming complaints and determine if probable violations exist or refers callers to the appropriate agency or personnel.
  • Provides answers to inquires relating to the statutes enforced by the Wage and Hour Division.
  • Documents detailed complaint statements thoroughly addressing the alleged violation(s).
  • Drafts and prepares responses to letters for the employers and employees on application of Wage and Hour laws, back wage installments complaints investigations statutes etc.
  • Communicates with internal and external personnel to determine the validity of complaints.
  • Conducts interviews in person, via telephone or virtually using systems such as Microsoft Teams.
  • Contacts employers by telephone to resolve complaints and where appropriate computes and when authorized negotiates back wages for complaints by means of conciliatory methods.

Qualifications

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level or equivalent pay band, in the Federal Service.

Examples of specialized experience are as follows:

- Preparing written communication to summarize information;
- Responding to and/or resolving customer complaints;
- Assisting with interviews or investigations to gather data/information;
- Analyzing numerical data to identify discrepancies and/or perform mathematical calculations.

There is no educational substitution in lieu of specialized experience for this position

A driver's license is preferred. In addition to the normal office worksite, the position involves occasional visits to business establishments. If the employee does not possess a driver's license, they may be required to visit establishments using public transportation, ride shares, etc.
